Today is World Brain Day, and we want to bring education and awareness to the importance of brain health. The American Brain Foundation highlights several proactive steps you can take to help protect your brain health:
1. Get plenty of sleep. Your body needs time to rest and reset, and your brain requires quality sleep for good brain health and a productive next day.
2. Take precautions against head injuries. Many of us grew up being told to wear a helmet while biking—this rule still applies in adulthood. Helmets are essential when riding a motorcycle, as well as wearing your seatbelt and following safety guidelines during sports activities, this help prevent head injuries.
3. Incorporate exercise into your weekly routine. Just 30 minutes of activity a few days a week can help counter natural age-related changes in the brain. Exercises that increase your heart rate support brain health by improving blood flow.
4. Keep your mind active. Mental health and brain health are closely connected.
Engaging in hobbies, social activities, and learning new things can support long term brain wellness. Whether it’s a daily Wordle, reading, or playing cards, keeping your brain active is an important step.
These proactive habits support your brain health—but seeing a neurologist is another important way to stay ahead of potential problems. To schedule an appointment with our neurologist, call (573) 651-1682 or visit www.midwestneurosurgeons.com.
