Chasing a brick wall? Focus on your Shared Matches tab! 👥

When you’re deep in the DNA weeds, looking at a single match gives you one piece of the puzzle. But looking at who you and that match both share tells you which branch of the tree you should prioritize.

Quick technique: If Match A and Match B share significant DNA with you and with each other, they almost certainly connect back to the same common ancestral couple. Sorting your matches into clusters based on shared connections is one of the single best ways to break down complex search barriers.

Are you actively clustering your matches, or are you still working through the main list?

DNA points the way, but documents tell the story. 📜🕊️

In genetic genealogy, DNA is essential for identifying the right branches of the family tree—but the paper trail is what lets us find the individual names.

If you are working toward identifying unknown family, remember that vital records, census logs, and historical obituaries are crucial for turning "Match 123" into a grandparent with a full history.

Which record group has been the most critical breakthrough in your search so far?

Staring at the "Send Message" button? Keep it simple. 📩✨

Reaching out to a newly identified DNA match can bring up a lot of nerves. It’s easy to feel like you need to write out your entire life story or attach every family record you have right away—but less is usually more!

A quick checklist for your first outreach:

Keep it brief, warm, and friendly.

Mention the specific platform and match strength ("I noticed we share 150 cM...").

Ask one simple, low-pressure question about family surnames or geographic origin.

Giving your match time and space to digest the notification makes them far more likely to respond comfortably.

What was the initial message that finally opened a door in your search?
