✨Zero✨
You have been long awaited sweet boy. You have been deeply prayed over. You are loved beyond measure.
Your momma worked so hard to get you here.
Daisy was a rescue mare that fell in my lap after her owners found out she was pregnant shortly after getting her out of a kill pen. She was emaciated, weak, and exhausted.
The community rallied and we got everything we needed to get Daisy back on track. She gained weight and strength in the 3 months I have had her. But I knew this was a high risk pregnancy and birth. Daisy has two blown stifles and a bucked knee. She has a deviated septum and is elderly (22+).
Today she delivered an absolutely massive foal. She became super weak after the birth and couldn’t get up. We tried and tried but she was not having it. Things looked bleak…she couldn’t even lift her head. So I gave her a dose of oxytocin to let her milk down a bit more. I then milked her as she lay there to get that liquid gold colostrum for baby Zero. I gave her some banamine and then we all worked to get Zero on the bottle.
Zero got some energy after that bottle and all his excitement put a glimmer in Daisy’s eyes. She wanted to try and get up so we all rallied behind her and in front of her to try one last time. A breath of wind came below her and lifted her to her feet. It was nothing short of a miracle.
From there we worked diligently to get Zero to latch and nurse.
Daisy has a severe hematoma from how big Zero was.
Zero is now nursing on his own.
It’s been a long day. Well, a long few months…
But I learned something…
“Love them anyway.”
I loved Daisy and Zero even though I knew their chances were slim. I knew they may break my heart, heck they still might we aren’t quite out of the woods yet. But what a privilege it has been to love them anyway. No love is ever wasted. I’m honored to have loved Daisy through this and I think fondly of all the love I showered Zero with in quiet whispers into Daisy’s belly. I’m grateful for Daisy’s trust in me to help her, she never bat an eye at my presence and assistance. ❤️
