Alcohol consumption in the United States has fallen to its lowest level in nearly 90 years, according to a new Gallup poll released Wednesday.
Just 54% of U.S. adults now say they drink alcohol, down from 62% in 2023 and 58% last year. The decline marks the steepest two-year drop in decades and pushes the rate to its lowest since Gallup began tracking drinking habits in 1939.
The poll suggests the shift is being driven largely by rising health concerns. More than half of Americans— 53%-now believe even moderate drinking is bad for their health, up sharply from 45% a year ago. That growing caution appears to be translating into less frequent and lighter consumption: only 24% of respondents said they had an alcoholic drink in the past 24 hours, 40% said they had not had one in over a week, and average weekly intake has dropped to 2.8 drinks, the lowest figure Gallup has recorded since 1996.
While experts note that alcohol sales remain strong among certain demographics, the overall trend reflects a broader cultural shift toward wellness, mindful consumption, and alternatives to traditional drinking. Economists also point to inflation and changing social norms as contributing factors. Public health officials see the decline as a positive step, citing alcohol’s links to cancer, heart disease, and other serious health risks. If the trend continues, America’s relationship with alcohol may be undergoing its most significant transformation in nearly a century.
