When you’re facing a huge suspension, an expulsion, or the realization that your child is four years behind in reading, the world gets very loud with opinions and judgment.

The "village" that’s supposed to support you often turns into a circle of critics, leaving you feeling like you’re failing at everything. My best advice for families in the thick of this crisis is to stop watching other people’s "perfect" lives on social media and look inward.

Your only job right now is to protect your little family and focus on the very next best step, and not the opinions of people who don't live your reality.

If that village isn't supporting you, they don't get a vote in your home.

Record Review

If your child’s 504 or IEP feels like it was written for “a student” instead of your student, that’s a problem.
A plan that is vague, recycled, or checkbox-based will not support your child enough.

Your child deserves a document that:

• Reflects their actual strengths & struggles
• Connects data to supports
• Holds the school accountable
• Is written clearly enough for any teacher to implement it

Your child is not failing because they aren't meeting milestones at the same time as everyone else. When we treat childhood like a competition, our kids feel like they are constantly losing.
