Want to know a secret? šŸ˜‰

Some of the BIGGEST breakthroughs with picky eating happen between ages 6-12.

I see it with my clients all the time. Most of my clients are in this age range and absolutely crush it in my program! šŸ™Œ

So why is this the sweet spot for progress?

Here’s why:

āž”ļø They’re aware that picky eating is holding them back and making them feel different. They’re ready to do something about it!

āž”ļø They can learn strategies and tools to make trying new foods feel less intimidating.

āž”ļø They can communicate their worries, mental blocks, and preferences, making it easier for us to tackle it together.

Older kids just get it. They need someone who truly understands their eating so they can start understanding their own habits and preferences so they can feel empowered and break free from food struggles.

One small plating tweak = HUGE progress šŸ‘‡

My client used to give her daughter a full separate meal every night: Protein, carb, fruit, & milk - all preferred foods.

And while it felt supportive, it actually kept her daughter stuck.

Because with a full plate, her daughter never even LOOKED at the family foods.

So we made one tiny shift:
šŸ‘‰ We offered only 1–2 preferred foods per meal, and started with smaller portions of them.

That way, we could create a natural pause in the meal for her daughter to notice the foods, build curiosity, and work towards eating them.

Fast-forward 2 months and this family now serves ONE meal, and their daughter is trying so many new foods. šŸ™ŒšŸ»

If this feels like something your family could try, save this post so you can come back to it when you’re ready. šŸ’›

When it comes to bribing your picky eater, here’s my advice ā¤µļø

ā€¼ļøDon’t add an incentive unless you can answer ā€œyesā€ to all the questions in slide 6ā€¼ļø

Even then, it’s something extremely nuanced for each child! That’s why my program, the KIND Feeding Academy, isn’t a cookie-cutter plan. It’s exactly what your child needs at every step of the process 🩷

What are your thoughts on this—are you surprised by my answer at all? Which parts of this are new to you? How is this different from what you’ve done before?

If I could only give ONE piece of advice, this would be it ā¤µļø

Recently, I onboarded 2 new families into my coaching program who have been asking their kids what they want to eat for years.

āž”ļø Both kids are extremely rigid in their eating and have strong brand preferences and need food to be absolutely *perfect* to be able to eat it.

āž”ļø Their food lists are small and they’ve dropped several preferred foods in the past several months.

āž”ļø There are gaps in their nutrition

āž”ļø The parents are panicking and the kids are super resistant to change.

I see this allllll the time!

I know it’s hard when your child struggles with picky eating, but catering to them is just going to send you spiraling.

Here’s what I’m having these 2 families do instead (one step at a time!)

āž”ļø List out of ALL the foods their child will eat and rotate through these foods to maximize their child’s variety.

āž”ļø Choose what’s on the menu for meals and snacks, while making sure to include at least 1 safe food each time.

āž”ļø Calmly and confidently handle mealtime situations as their child adjusts to this new approach.

āž”ļø Make small changes to rigid foods and work towards having their child be able to eat each food at least 3 different ways again.

āž”ļø Serve non-preferred foods more often - we’ll put some strategy behind which new foods we’re working on, how to serve them, and how to engage their child with these foods productively.

If you’ve found yourself in this situation too, try some of these action steps! And if you want my personalized guidance and support every step of the way, comment ā€œprogramā€ to learn more about my 4-month coaching program.

I’m currently offering a holiday discount on all 3 levels of the program until December 12th—DM me for details!

I see tons of potential! 🤩

What feels extremely limiting to you, looks like a great launching pad to me! šŸš€

But we can’t start with broccoli or ā€œreal chickenā€

We have to start by asking: ā¬‡ļø
āž”ļø What do they already eat?
āž”ļø Where can we go next?

That’s how they practice the tools and skills to accept new foods…

This is how they build confidence…

And THEN we keep building progress and expanding from there!

This is exactly the type of thing we work on together inside my 1:1 coaching program.

Instead of trying random tips and hoping something sticks, we look at YOUR child’s current foods, their preferences, their challenges, and what step they’re actually ready for next.

If there’s ONE thing I want you to know, it’s THIS ā¬‡ļø

You can be considerate of your child’s food preferences, without CATERING to them.

Ever since my kids were babies, I’ve always fed them the same meal I eat!

āž”ļø Sometimes I add an extra preferred food like fruit or bread to the side

āž”ļø Sometimes I deconstruct it for them

āž”ļø Sometimes I offer a preferred dip

but I always serve them the same meal as me and my husband.

And THAT is why they eat such a variety of food.

Now let me be honest - they sometimes complain about the meal, and sometimes they eat very little or choose not to eat, but that’s NORMAL.

I know I’ve done my job and providing foods I know they can eat, and then it’s up to them to decide how much to eat.

If I made them a separate meal every time they complained, we be deep in the picky eating trenches too.

So look at your familyā€˜s meals and find a way to merge them with your child’s food preferences. Start with 1-2 meals per week and go from there.

Questions? Thoughts? I’d love to hear them! ā¬‡ļø

And don’t forget to follow along for more! I share tons of examples of my family’s meals on my stories, including how I edit them for my kids WITHOUT catering!

Here’s the truth your pediatrician is missing… ā¬‡ļø

āž”ļø If eating is getting more limited
āž”ļø If food fears are growing
āž”ļø If mealtimes feel like a battle…

✨ This isn’t ā€œtypicalā€ picky eating.ā€ And it’s not going to magically fix itself.✨

You and your child deserve a provider who listens, validates, and helps you get to the root of what’s going on so your child can finally feel confident and safe with food.

This is exactly what I do. I support older kids who have been dismissed for years, who are now struggling even more and need someone who knows how to empower them to comfortably expand their foods.

🚫Not because snacks are bad…

But because unlimited access often leads to grazing, filling up on ā€œsafeā€ foods, and avoiding meals altogether.

✨This doesn’t mean you should take away snacks… It just means we can set it up differently so it supports their eating instead of unintentionally sabotaging it✨

Here’s how you do that ā¬‡ļø

āž”ļø Set a predictable meal/snack schedule so your child is eating every ~2.3-3 hours. This promotes appetite, reduces grazing, and helps them show up to meals ready to eat.

āž”ļø YOU decide what’s on the menu for most meals and snacks. This isn’t about control… It’s about making sure you rotate a variety of foods and prevent them from getting stuck on a handful of foods.

āž”ļø Give them supported choices, not free rein. You can still offer autonomy without letting snacks take over. Try something like:

šŸ‘‰ ā€œWe’re having apples and peanut butter for snack… which type of cracker would you like with it?ā€

Or if your child asks for chips:
šŸ‘‰ ā€œSure, what can we add to it?ā€

Then guide them to choose a protein, fruit, and/or veggie to complete the snack.

These small tweaks keep the independence they crave and give them the structure they need to expand their eating over time.

Does your child currently have open access to snacks?

Are you ready to try a structure that actually supports their eating?

šŸ‘‰šŸ» Try it out and let me know how it goes!
