This Cancer Survivors Month, we're reminded of how important it is to speak up when something feels off. Jennifer noticed a tiny change that didn’t look like cancer at all – no swelling, no redness, no pain – something just “felt a little different.” Mentioning it at a routine appointment set everything in motion and ultimately led to early diagnosis and treatment. Her message is simple, but powerful: if something doesn’t feel right, don’t ignore it. Talk to your doctor. Read more: https://bit.ly/4bVHmDi

Cancer survivorship looks different for everyone. For Billy Douglas, it looks like creating his own foundation to raise money for cancer research and hosting community events to educate his friends and neighbors about cancer.

After surviving advanced kidney cancer, Billy Douglas is determined to educate more people about cancer prevention and cancer care.

For many children with medulloblastoma, treatment works. But when the cancer does return, options become limited and outcomes are often devastating.

New Hollings research targeted the small group of tumor cells that can survive treatment and enable the childhood cancer to return. In preclinical models, a drug that blocked two key cancer pathways delayed recurrence and helped keep the cancer from coming back.

“This is about going after the root of relapse,” said lead researcher Dr. Jezabel Rodriguez Blanco.

The findings could help guide future approaches for treating aggressive pediatric brain tumors.

After four cancer diagnoses, Betty Frasier knows cancer care is about more than treatment.

Over nearly a decade, she has faced surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation, recurrence and the daily challenges of living with lung cancer. Through it all, she says the relationships she built with her care team at Hollings helped carry her forward.

That support led Betty to do something she never imagined: share her story publicly at the American Cancer Society’s National Lung Cancer Roundtable Annual Meeting, where she spoke to hundreds of clinicians, researchers and fellow patients about her cancer journey.

“At first, I didn’t want to do it,” she admits. “But once I got there, everybody just seemed so loving and caring.”

Her story is one of resilience, faith and the connections that can make all the difference during cancer care.

Are flavored e-ci******es a public health risk – or a tool to help adults quit smoking?

A recent decision by the Food and Drug Administration to approve some fruit-flavored va**ng products has reignited debate among to***co researchers, regulators and public health advocates. Hollings researchers say the issue reflects a difficult balancing act: protecting youth from ni****ne addiction while helping adult smokers move away from combustible ci******es.

“There are tons of flavored illicit products already on the market that are much easier for youth to access than these new products that have age-gating technology,” said Hollings researcher Dr. Tracy Smith.
