Lost coverage for your weight loss medication?

Before you panic, know that insurance saying no doesn’t necessarily mean you’re out of options.

Before GLP-1 medications became so widely used, we already had medications like Qsymia, Contrave, and Saxenda. And one of the older GLP-1 medications, liraglutide, is now available as a generic, which can sometimes make it a more affordable option depending on the dose and pharmacy.
So if your coverage suddenly changes, the first question I’d ask isn’t, “What am I going to do now?”

It’s, “Why did my coverage change?”

Sometimes a denial can be appealed or a prior authorization can be resubmitted. Sometimes there may be another medication your insurance will cover. And sometimes a cash-pay or lower-cost option may make sense.
Losing access to a medication that was working can be incredibly frustrating. But insurance saying no does not mean your treatment journey has to end.

Losing insurance coverage for a weight loss medication that has been working can be incredibly frustrating. Maybe you were losing weight, experiencing less hunger and food noise, and finally feeling like you had found something that worked, only to learn that your insurance would no longer cover it. When stopping medication leads to increased hunger or weight regain, it can leave you wondering whether you should have ever started in the first place.

If a medication stopped working for you or you regained weight, that does not make you a failure. It's not a "YOU" problem.

We know so much about obesity and its treatment, but we’re still learning every day. A hundred years ago, we didn’t understand insulin the way we do today. Not long before that, bloodletting was common and doctors weren’t even consistently washing their hands before treating patients.

So when a treatment doesn’t work the way we hoped, maybe the question isn’t, “What did I do wrong?”

Maybe it’s also, “What are we still learning about this disease?”

Because obesity is complex. Treatment response varies. And when someone struggles, I don’t think the answer should be more shame.

I think it should be more curiosity, better support, and a willingness to keep learning.

You want the help, but you’re scared to start a GLP-1.

What if you have terrible side effects? What if you become dependent on it? What if it doesn’t work? What will people think? And what happens if you eventually stop taking it?

These are questions I hear all the time, and they deserve thoughtful answers. There is so much fear surrounding GLP-1 medications, especially online, where the scariest experiences often get the most attention.

In my newest episode of Conquer Your Weight, I’m talking about the fears that can come up before starting a GLP-1, what you should actually discuss with your physician, and how to separate informed caution from misinformation and weight stigma.

You don’t have to feel completely fearless before making a decision about treatment. You just deserve accurate information, appropriate medical support, and a care team that partners with you.
