We Can Live Above Our Circumstances-But Do We Try?

I lived in a marriage with an alcoholic for about 38 years of our lives. We were high school sweethearts, and at that time he was the fun drinker, but over time it was no longer fun.

By the time we were in our late 30’s, I could not stand the drinking. I needed an out. But by that time, I began walking closely with Jesus, & I knew that “out” wasn’t through divorce.

But God had a plan. He showed me how to take every thought captive &make them obedient to Christ.
He showed me how, if I focused on what He was calling me to do, He would take care of what I couldn’t. (and I could even enjoy life in the process.)

He showed me the importance of walking in obedience to His Word, & that obedience always results in blessings.

He taught me one huge thing, “Bloom where you’re planted.” And I did. Everywhere, my husband‘s job moved us, I found my people, my support groups, places where I could serve, & it took my mind to better places than my immediate pit that I had been thrown into by my husband’s drinking.

We get the choice whether we’re going to submit to & decorate the pit we find ourselves in, or if we are going to trust God’s Word and rise above that pit. At first maybe only mentally & spiritually, but because God is faithful, eventually also physically (in our circumstances). And He always will. Trials don’t last forever.

Peace & Blessings, My Friend❤️ We can get through this together!

Steer Clear Of The Hope Killers

One thing I could not accept when I attended Al-Anon was they’re teaching on expectations. A common quote of AA / ALANON is,“Expectation is a premeditated resentment”. That’s very close to what MJ says in Spider-Man, “Expect disappointment and you’ll never get disappointed.” These quotes are in direct opposition to what the Bible tells us about hope. They are in fact, encouraging a pessimistic attitude in an attempt to prevent ourselves from being let down. Let me tell you, if you hope for nothing you will get nothing.

Scripture tells us:
Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
‭‭Heb‬ ‭11‬:‭1‬ ‭

“Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”
‭‭Rom‬ ‭5‬:‭3‬-‭5‬ ‭

“And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.” Heb 11‬:‭6‬ ‭

That last verse doesn’t use the word “hope”, but that verse gave me hope to hold on to believe that if I trusted God & His promises, I would see them happen in my life. That’s hope. Thats what gets us through alcoholism.

Long accepted & well-meaning sources have to be tested against the only solid truth that we have and that is the word of God. In Hebrews 11:1 above that word “hope” comes from the Greek root word “elpis” which means “To hope, hope for, expect, trust; to expect or confide.” (Biblehub.com)

Friends having hope is expecting. It’s expecting God to act & our situations not getting the final say.

If the only support group you have available is Al-Anon, let me challenge you. Please take what agrees with the word of God & leave the rest. Negativity & pessimism are often self-fulfilling prophecies. You speak it, you get it. You hear it daily, it will come into fruition in your life. What are you filling your mind with? I pray it’s the word of God and the hope contained within.

Peace and Blessings, My Friend❤️We can get through this together!

How We Respond Matters

Our spouses are not the enemy. The battle must be won in our minds to fight for them instead of against them & its a hard one! In photo 1, I don’t know if you can see it, but in the background, the demons are laughing because they know we have sided with them when we act this way. No condemnation, just a teaching moment to show what is happening in the spiritual realm, which is all around us, always looking for an inlet through our reactions.

Ephesians 6 talks about the spiritual realm, and how our battles are not against flesh & blood, but against the spiritual realm. These pictures depict it perfectly.

In the 2nd picture, we see that our prayers can stir up the spiritual realm to bring angels to assist, ones we never even see. We are bringing in one or the other with our reactions, have no doubt.

So many times I was picture one. Sadly, my children witnessed it, and anyone within earshot, even an entire bar full of people the day I stormed in & poured his whole drink over my husband‘s head, then stormed out. I sided with the enemy.

Even when I knew what God was asking of me. I often failed because the battle is hard. It’s hard to overcome our feelings in our anger. Its a powerful driving force if we don’t get it in check. I didn’t get mine in check for a long time, in fact, not on a regular basis until after he was sober. So I understand the battle, but I wanted to share with you what’s going on in the spiritual realm, and remind you that you can make the decision to respond differently. All of heaven will be rejoicing when you do- even rallying to your aid.

My prayer for you is that you realize how important your responses are, & that your husband is not the enemy. Fight for him, not with him. Holy Spirit will give you the strength. “ I can do all things through Christ Who gives me strength.” (Phil 4:13)

Do You Have A Support System In Place?

Sheila Walsh stated the above statement in an interview, & I thought to myself -how true it is! I’ve seen it work through Celebrate Recovery (CR) on a regular basis.

We weren’t designed to carry our burdens alone, especially if we don’t know Jesus. Alone is where the enemy (the devil) does his greatest work.

2 Corinthians 1:4
“the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves received from God.”This is the basis of CR. We are helped, so we can continue the pattern. Our testimony helps another & so in. And it’s not only about testimonies, it’s about companionship, accountability, & relatability. Like CS Lewis says, “What?! You too? I thought I was the only one!” This is what you see in CR. People who get what you’re going through because they’ve either been there or currently are there.

Something else Sheila said in that interview really stuck out to me, “Our brokenness is a far better bridge than our pretense to wholeness ever could be.” In CR you get realness. No masks. No pretending to have it all together. In an authentic CR group, even the leaders share their struggles because, as Sheila said, relationships formed in brokenness can be beautiful!

If you have never tried Celebrate Recovery, I encourage you to Google “Celebrate Recovery Finder” and give a few groups a try. If one isn’t your “flavor” try another. The churches DNA will be in the Celebrate Recovery, so just like choosing a church, you should take the time to choose the right CR for you. God will lead you where He wants you to be.🙏

Joyce Meyer Has Always Spoken My Language

Once you wear yourself out trying to change your spouse, you may find that’s the time God decides to make a change in you. That change could be the very key that unlocks the door to motivating your spouse. God always begins with the one who is willing.

Are you willing?

Peace & Blessings, My Friend ❤️We can get those together!

Does This Apply To My Drinking Husband?

You better believe it does!

I’ve been on “Christian” facebook groups that try to pick and choose the scriptures that apply to their drunken husbands. They would choose scriptures about “not even associating with” people like that (1 Cor 5:11) without recognizing scriptures, like this one. And, if they would continue reading on a little further in that same book, just 2 chapters later, 1 Cor 7, the same writer gives specifics on a Christian woman married to even an unbeliever under the subtitle, “ Questions Regarding Marriage”.

We can’t tear down our ah’s under the guise of “obedience”, & God forbid we give that advice to anyone! Those that offer that kind of advice have never healed themselves from the offense and hurt of their own alcoholic marriages. They are not fit to be leading anyone in this journey, especially under the title of “Christian”.

There are some really great pages that don’t directly focus on “wives of alcoholics”, but that focus on marriage as a whole, that are much more suitable to guide us with Christian principles. I’ve seen those moderators guide people gently and biblically even when it meant they would have to call them on their sin. Those are the kind of groups we need to be in. Christian Marriage Restoration is one of my favorites.

I don’t know about you, but I never wanted to get to heaven and hear, “If only you would’ve followed what I was trying to tell you. I had so much for you and your husband.” My goal is to hear, “Well done good and faithful servant.” We have to get to a place where we trust God more than we trust our flesh, where doing things His way means more to us than getting our way.

Peace & Blessings, My Friend ❤️We can get through this together!
