So you are ready to get help for yourself or a loved one... now what?

Here are some ways that you can find the support that's right for you.

Psychologytoday.com and Therapyfinder.com

Both of these options allow you to filter counselors by gender, specialties, and insurance coverage. You are able to see photos and learn a little about your options.

Checking your insurance "find a doctor" or call them directly.
These can be a great resource, but can also be outdated.

BONUS: Talk to your primary care provider for potential resources.

Let's Talk About Su***de.

Yesterday we talked about what to say, and not needing to have all the answers.

Today I wanted to give some things to avoid that could discourage future conversations.

While all of these comments may be said with good intentions what they do is close the door for the person who is reaching out. Avoid explaining why they shouldn't feel that way or offering quick solutions.

Slow down, take a breath, and simply be there with them. Take comfort in knowing that them coming to you is a great first step alone.

Finding support is an important next step, but it doesn't have to happen immediately. Stay tuned for steps to finding professional supports.

What should you say when someone tells you they're having suicidal thoughts?

It's a normal reaction to want to take that pain from them, to find the words to "fix it."
Let me take that pressure from you.

🌿You don't need perfect words. 🌿

They already opened the door, just let them know you're there.

Next steps for finding supports and resources will come - but don't underestimate the power of just being present.

It can feel like an uncomfortable subject to bring up, especially with your teens.
There is a fear that I will "put ideas in their mind" or "cause suicidal thoughts."

The truth is that suicidal thoughts carry power when they're given space to grow - when they're the thing we can't talk about.

Even when teens have a close relationship with their parents - it can be hard to find a time to bring up the intense emotions. So parents, don't be afraid to check-in.
