What are YOU training to keep doing? 👇

Being fit after 50 means something different to me than it did years ago.

Yes, I want muscle. I want strength. I want endurance. 💪

But what I really want is the freedom those things give me:
✈️ To travel
🥾 To hike
🛍️ To carry what I need to carry
⬇️ To get down on the floor, play with my dog, Dan, and back up again
💛 To keep doing the things I love without my body being the reason I say no

At 62, that’s what I’m training for.

Not just how my body looks.

What my body can still do.

Thursdays With Andrea 💛

Squat to lunge, row or chest press: which one would you try first? 👇

Strength at 79 looks pretty impressive, doesn’t it? 💪

What I love most about Andrea’s training isn’t how much weight she lifts. It’s how she’s combining strength, balance, coordination and control.

This week she worked on:
1️⃣ Chalice squat to reverse lunge
2️⃣ Three-point dumbbell row
3️⃣ Split-stance resistance-tube chest press

That squat into a reverse lunge? It’s challenging at any age! Hold a counter or chair if you’re trying it for the first time.

At 79, Andrea is still challenging herself, learning new movements and getting stronger. That’s what healthy aging looks like to me. 💛

What’s your biggest barrier to strength training right now: time, knowing what to do, or something else? 👇

Twenty minutes isn’t a throwaway workout. ⏱️ If that’s the time you have, use it well.

Here’s what I’d do:
1️⃣ Goblet squat: 8 to 12 reps
2️⃣ Dumbbell Romanian deadlift: 8 to 12 reps
3️⃣ Dumbbell chest press: 8 to 12 reps
4️⃣ One-arm dumbbell row: 8 to 12 per side
5️⃣ Farmer’s march: 30 to 45 seconds

Complete 2 to 3 rounds. Choose weights that actually challenge you, and keep your rest reasonable. 💪

Squat. Hinge. Push. Pull. Core.

Simple doesn’t mean ineffective.

I’d much rather see you do 20 focused minutes consistently than skip strength training because you think every workout needs to be an hour. 💛

Save this for your next busy day. 💾

When you think about progress, is the number on the scale still the first thing you check? 👇
The scale can tell you how much you weigh.

It can’t tell you what you’re losing. ⚖️

And after 50, that matters.

When you lose weight, you can lose fat. But you can also lose muscle, and that muscle is what keeps you strong, capable and independent. 💪

So if weight loss is your goal, here’s what I want you paying attention to:
1️⃣ Keep strength training. Give your body a reason to hold onto muscle.
2️⃣ Prioritize protein. Aim for a palm-sized portion at each meal.
3️⃣ Look beyond the scale. Are you getting stronger? Moving better?

Use the scale if it’s helpful information for you.

Just don’t let it be the only information you pay attention to. 💛

Are you walking, lifting, or both right now? 👇

Walking absolutely belongs in a healthy-aging routine. 🚶‍♀️ It’s weight-bearing, it’s accessible and it comes with plenty of benefits.

But when we’re talking about keeping your bones strong as you get older, I don’t want strength training left out of the conversation.

Your bones respond to load, so give them a reason to adapt:

1️⃣ Squats
2️⃣ Step-ups
3️⃣ Romanian deadlifts
4️⃣ Loaded carries

These don’t just train your muscles. They put healthy stress through your bones, too. 💪

So keep your walks.

Then pick up the weights. 💛

Save this for your next strength day. 💾

💪 You don’t need jumping, burpees or pounding on your joints to make a workout challenging.

Low impact and low intensity are two very different things!

The weights you choose, your pace, your range of motion, your rest periods and the exercises themselves can all increase the challenge without increasing impact.

🔥 Try this one:
⏱️ 40 sec each exercise
⏱️ 20 sec transition
🔁 2–3 rounds

And don’t underestimate that farmer’s march!

Slow it down, use enough weight and keep your body from shifting side to side.

Your core will know it’s working. 💪

Are you team low-impact workouts? 👇

🧡 “It’s not that easy. It takes concentration. One little misstep messes you up.”

That’s Andrea, at 79, describing what it’s really like to challenge your balance!
And she’s absolutely right. 👏

Balance takes concentration, coordination and practice.

This week we’re working on three different challenges:

🚶‍♀️ Heel-to-toe walks: Slowing down and controlling every step with a narrower base of support.
💪 Steam rollers: Adding coordinated movement while maintaining balance and control.
👣 Toe taps: Reaching front, side and back while keeping the standing leg strong and steady.

These exercises may look simple, but they’re not necessarily easy!

And that’s the point.

Balance isn’t something you either have or you don’t. It’s a skill you can work on and improve with practice.

❤️ At 79, Andrea is a great reminder that it’s never too late to keep challenging yourself.

Which of these three balance exercises would challenge you the most? 👇

💪 Joint-friendly training can still be challenging training!

This full-body workout gives you a squat, hinge, pull, push and core exercise without jumping or high-impact movements.

📌 Save this one and try:
✅ 8–12 reps each
✅ 2–3 rounds
✅ Rest as needed between rounds

And remember, joint-friendly doesn’t automatically mean light weights.

Choose a resistance that challenges you while still allowing you to maintain good form.

Which of these 5 are you adding to your next workout? 👇

🚶‍♀️ Being active is important. But activity alone may not give your muscles enough resistance to maintain or build strength as you get older.
Walking, cycling, gardening, pickleball... keep doing ALL of it! 🚴‍♀️🌿

Then add strength training. 💪

Think of it this way: strength training helps build the body that allows you to keep doing the activities you love.

❤️ What’s the activity you want to still be doing 10 or 20 years from now?

Tell me in the comments. 👇
