St. Louis Magazine featured our co-owners, Katie and Michael, in its Chesterfield Community Spotlight.

As Katie told the magazine, “all I want to do is provide people choices, and supply support when it matters most.”

One more line from the spotlight that our whole team lives by: “You have to take care of the people who are taking care of the families.”

Thank you, St. Louis Magazine, for sharing our story

A care assessment is the single most useful hour in the whole process, and families often put it off because almost nobody explains what it is

At ours, an experienced member of our care team comes to the home for about an hour. We talk through what changed, what a normal day looks like, how your parent moves through the house, and what they want in their own words. It is complimentary, and you do not sign anything that day unless you want to

Three things make the hour go further: a current medication list, your notes on what you have been seeing, and the family members who are part of the decision, even on speakerphone

Most families keep a list of medications. Fewer keep a list of what makes Mom's day a good one.

Her music. The show she watches at four. How she likes her eggs. The friend who calls on Thursdays. The walk she takes when the weather's nice.

Write it down and keep it by the phone. Anyone who helps out, a sibling, a neighbor, a caregiver, will know how to make the day feel like hers

"But what will the caregiver actually do all day?" It's one of the first questions families ask us, and a fair one.

Most of a shift is daily living: bathing and dressing, a steady arm on the walk to the kitchen, real meals, medication reminders, rides to appointments, and good company. Underneath all of it is a trained set of eyes in the house, noticing small changes while they're still small.

Here's the full answer, including what stays in a nurse's lane:

We're growing, and we'd love to add someone special to our office team! 💛

We're looking for a Part-Time HR Manager to help us find and welcome the caregivers who make Here at Home what it is. It's mostly work from home, 10 to 15 hours a week to start. You'd own our recruiting, hiring, and onboarding. Pay is based on experience.

We're a locally owned agency, and our office is a small, close team. The people here are the same people families and caregivers reach when they call. If this sounds like you, or someone you know, we'd love to hear from you at [email protected].

Neighbor to Neighbor: two minutes with her phone

Next visit, ask if you can borrow your mom's phone for two minutes.

Put her favorite people on the first screen, each with a photo, so calling family is one tap. Turn the ringer and the text size up. Fill in her emergency contacts and medical information: on an iPhone that's Medical ID in the Health app, and on most Android phones it's under Safety and emergency in Settings. Then save your number with "Daughter" or "Son" in the name, so anyone helping her can find you fast.

A small setup, and the phone works better for her every day after

You've noticed your parent needs some help at home. The next question is what to do first, and the order makes a real difference.

Write down what you're actually seeing. Talk with your parent before anyone else. Loop in the doctor. Sort out what kind of help it is. Then have an assessment done before you commit to anything.

We walk through all five steps, and why that order works, here:

Most families wait to have the conversation until something has already gone wrong. It goes better earlier, and smaller.

Start with one task your parent already finds annoying. The yard. The driving at night. The grocery run on a Tuesday. Ask whether it would be nice to have that one thing handled.

The word care can wait. One handled Tuesday usually does the talking
