Turns out the real threat to my attachment with my child was chronic exhaustionâŚNOT sleep training.
Because attachment isnât built during miserable 2am wakeups when everyone is exhausted.
Itâs built through consistent, responsive care over time...when theyâre AWAKE.
And the research backs that up.
A long-term study published in Pediatrics followed families 5 years after sleep training and found NO differences in emotional health, stress levels, behavior, or parent-child attachment compared to families who didnât sleep train (Gradisar et al., 2016).
The American Academy of Pediatrics has also found that behavioral sleep interventions:
âď¸ Improve infant sleep
âď¸ Improve parental mental health
âď¸ Do not harm attachment
And honestly? That makes sense.
Because when parents are sleeping, theyâre more patient. More present. More emotionally available.
Which is exactly what secure attachment requires.
Teaching your child how to sleep independently isnât abandoning them.
Itâs giving them a lifelong skill while you continue showing up with love, consistency, and support.
