New research suggests celiac disease may have broader long-term health impacts than previously understood.

A nationwide study from Sweden, published in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, found patients with celiac disease faced nearly three times the risk of requiring a solid organ transplant compared with the general population. Researchers reported the strongest association with liver transplantation, with patients more than seven times as likely to require a liver transplant.

The study analyzed health data from more than 41,000 patients with biopsy-confirmed celiac disease over an average follow-up period of 12 years.

Researchers say the findings underscore the need for greater awareness of the disease’s potential systemic effects beyond the digestive tract.
