As a pediatrician, I spend a lot of time talking about nutrition. It's not easy trying to get all the "good stuff" into our kids that we know they need for healthy growth and development. Here we talk about how much calcium kids need at different ages, and how we can (try to) make that happen!

Knowing YOU (Mom) will be taken care of after you bring your baby home isn't worth it...
..It's ESSENTIAL!!!! πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸΎπŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸΏπŸ‘πŸ½

After you have a baby, you will be:
1. Healing your own body from a huge event (labor and delivery ain't easy!)
2. Needing to see your pediatrician 1-3 times in the first 2 weeks, and likely 4-5 times in 6 weeks! (But possibly not seeing your OB at all.)
3. Trying to figure out how to feed your baby and how to tell what your baby wants when.
4. Worried about every little hiccup, sneeze, spot on the skin, p**p that looks a little different from the last, and little grunt or groan your baby makes.
5. Navigating a whole new role as a mother or parent or trying to figure out how to be a family with one more kiddo if it's not your first rodeo.
6. Having major hormone shifts that can wreak havoc on your moods.

Our postpartum 4th Trimester packages will give you....
1. Convenience! A doc who comes to you! πŸ‘©πŸ»β€βš•οΈπŸ©ΊπŸ‘πŸ«Ά
2. Knowledge and answers. Text your doc with any of your questions instead of going down the Google rabbit hole and making yourself more worried!
3. Mental health screening, BP and wound checks for you, pelvic floor dysfunction screening, check-ins with your partner and other kiddos to make sure everyone is doing OK.
4. Time. Time with your doc - appointments usually aren't under an hour long, and sometimes can be up to 2 hours if needed!
5. Infant feeding support. Whether you're breastfeeding or giving formula by bottle or anything in between, you'll have someone knowledgeable to help guide you.
6. So much less to worry about!
And....
7. The postpartum care for Mom and Baby that you DESERVE.

Bubbles are such a great way to distract kids when they're nervous, or even to get them to take deep breaths that can be instantly calming. 🫧

I always have my bubbles with me at my visits - you never know when they'll come in handy! βœ¨πŸŒ€

Exclusive pumping can be a viable option for mothers who are unable to nurse directly for a variety of reasons, including medical conditions that prevent them from nursing, scheduling conflicts, or low milk supply. While it works for many, it can also be a time-consuming and demanding process and can have its own set of "side effects" that can make things more difficult. Here are some tips to help make it a little more tolerable. Anyone exclusively pumping is a rockstar!!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️ I'm not sure if I could have done it.

When swimming with young kids who are not independent, skilled swimmers, the safest way to swim is "Arms Reach Swimming." 🀝 This is also known as "touch supervision." It is recommended by water safety organizations as well as the American Academy of Pediatrics, and makes a lot of sense. If you are on the sidelines, you are going to be more easily distracted or perhaps even called away. 🫣 If you are in the pool in arm's reach, you will be focused on your child fully.

Alternatives to going to the pool or beach if the adults are outnumbered:
1. Play in a sprinkler πŸ’¦
2. Go to a splashpad 🌊
3. Have a water balloon fight 🎈🎈🎈
4. Play at a water table in your yardπŸ’¦
5. If you allow them as toys, play water gun tag πŸ’¦

Remember, this applies to ALL bodies of water, even small ones. Parents should not leave young children unattended in a hot tub or even in a bathtub.
Drowning can happen in a matter of seconds. Be vigilant always.

Puddle jumpers and other floaties are dangerous!!!

πŸ’¦ Puddle jumpers give kids a false sense of security. A healthy fear of the water is actually a good thing!
πŸ’¦ Puddle jumpers give parents a false sense of security that they don't need to keep an eye on their child if the floatie is on (what if someone takes it off or it breaks?).
πŸ’¦ Floaties put kids in a vertical=drowning position. We want kids to learn to float when they are in trouble.
πŸ’¦ When you are going to be around open water (lakes, boating, etc.) and your child needs a life vest - only use Coast Guard approved life vests. 🦺
πŸ’¦ Have your young child wear a life vest around the house a few times to get the feel for it (especially if you have a child with sensory issues), so that things go smoothly when they truly need to wear it. (Thank you Lois Goldstein for the tip! 😘)
