Devora Stern is a pioneer in the Chicagoland Jewish community for being a founding mother of SHALVA.

She’s also an actual mother, and grandmother.

L’dor v’dor means “from generation to generation”. In Judaism, it’s considered a responsibility to maintain continuity — by passing down knowledge, customs, and traditions.

For Devora, she has passed the torch to her daughter Chumi, and her granddaughter Ahuva — both are involved in SHALVA today. Chumi is one of our community ambassadors, and Ahuva is an associate board member.

To celebrate 40 years of SHALVA, we’re highlighting Devora’s legacy. 💜

Trigger warning: sexual assault.

There is a lot of important discussion happening right now about sexual assault. On this anniversary of the horrific events of October 7th, we at SHALVA want to bear witness to the many instances of sexual assault that took place that day in Israel, 2023.

In our work supporting survivors of domestic abuse, we are deeply familiar with the devastating effects of sexual assault.

We are firm in our commitment to helping all survivors heal, destigmatizing the conversation around abuse, and creating community where abuse and assault of any kind are not tolerated.

If you or someone you love may be experiencing domestic abuse, call today to speak to a kind and compassionate trained professional.

Not sure what to call it? Or, more sure than you've ever been? Call SHALVA: 773-583-HOPE (4673)

SHALVA is the oldest independent, Jewish domestic abuse agency in the United States.

Since 1986, we have worked to break the cycle of abuse by giving survivors the support they need and educating the community about intimate partner abuse.

We are grateful for Fayge Siegal and all of SHALVA’s founding mothers for establishing our organization 40 years ago.

In a conversation with SHALVA staff recently, Fayge said,

“People need to know if you really feel strongly about something, and you really feel something needs to be done, just because you’re a group of a few people doesn’t mean it can’t get done.

If something is important, we can do it. A lot of very major things have happened because a few people said “let’s do it.”’

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM).

Spend a few minutes today learning about domestic violence and how who’s been impacted.

Domestic violence is a pattern of coercive, controlling behavior that can include physical, emotional, verbal, sexual, financial, and other types of abuse.

According to the World Health Organization, domestic violence is “devastatingly pervasive” and is by far the most prevalent form of violence against women globally.

DV can happen to anyone, but survivors and victims of marginalized backgrounds and identities can have these used against them as tactics of control by their abusers. They also often face additional barriers to seeking help.

It’s up to all of us to create a better, safer world.

Tonight begins the first night of Sukkot, a festival of gathering. 🌿

The holiday celebrates the gathering of the harvest, and the protection that was provided for the Jewish people for 40 years after their exodus from slavery in Egypt.

During the holiday, gathering in the Sukkah is a mitzvah (good deed), and also implies a sense of closeness and security.

It’s also a mitzvah to protect yourself and your soul. So if something doesn’t feel right in your interpersonal relationship, please reach out. Everyone deserves to feel safe at home.

Our help line is free, confidential, and available 24/7.
