Same intensity, different engine. Bipolar disorder affects about 2.8% of U.S. adults; borderline personality disorder about 1.4%—and they’re often confused. In bipolar, mood shifts come in episodes that last days to weeks and change sleep, energy, and activity. In borderline, shifts are faster, often tied to relationships and stress, with patterns of sensitivity and impulsivity. If this sounds familiar, a careful evaluation can sort out what’s happening and point to treatment that fits.

A common myth is that depression always looks like someone who cannot get out of bed. The fact is that many people live with what is sometimes called “functional” depression, where they keep working, caring for others, and showing up, while feeling numb, hopeless, or exhausted inside. Their struggle is just as real, even if other people do not see a dramatic change on the outside.

It is also a myth that there is only one type of depression. There are different subtypes and specifiers, and some people experience mixed features, where symptoms of depression and symptoms that look more energized or agitated show up at the same time. A proper diagnosis looks at how long symptoms have been present, how they cluster together, and how they affect daily life, not just whether someone appears “sad enough” from the outside. https://www.dbsalliance.org/education/depression/

This: Depression = ongoing feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and fatigue.
That: Bipolar disorder = those same depressive symptoms, plus mood episodes that shift to mania or hypomania.
Knowing the difference can be the key to effective support and treatment. https://www.dbsalliance.org/education/

Everyone has a story, and every story matters.

This Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, DBSA is sharing stories from people with lived experience to shine a light on the mental health challenges and disparities that impact many communities. By listening, learning, and connecting through these experiences, we can foster understanding and remind others that recovery is possible—and no one has to face their journey alone.

Our Identity & Culture resources highlight the intersection of mental health, culture, race, ethnicity, gender identity, and more, helping create a more inclusive understanding of wellness and recovery.

July is Minority Mental Health Awareness Month.

Mental health care is not equally accessible to every community. Many people in BIPOC and marginalized communities face added barriers to care, including cost, stigma, discrimination, lack of culturally responsive providers, and limited access to support.

This month is a reminder that awareness is not enough. We need to continue advocating for mental health care that is accessible, equitable, and responsive to the lived experiences of the communities being served.
