Friendly reminder that most forms of hair loss or Alopecia are CHRONIC CONDITIONS that require long term maintenance treatments.

I have seen several people back of late who achieved fantastic results, then stopped treatments because their hair grew back, were lost to follow up for years, then come back and their Central Centrifuge Cicatricial Alopecia has doubled or sometimes tripled in size 😳. Unfortunately it doesn’t work that way. There is no one limited time treatment “cure.” I often tell patients that it’s like brushing your teeth and requires daily maintenance and care. But with consistency and a solid maintenance plan, we can help you maintain and continue to achieve results.

This patient went 9 years without Dermatology follow up and had significant progression of her condition.

Just a PSA that if you have been diagnosed with a form of scarring alopecia and you haven’t been back to your Dermatologist in a while, schedule a follow up appointment‼️ This patient was floored that her hair loss had progressed so much without treatment. I hear this often hence why we take photos at EVERY visit. If your Dermatologist is not doing this, ask them to. It’s hard to remember what your scalp looked like 9 months, let alone 9 years ago. But thanks to the electronic medical record, it is easy to quickly do a comparative assessment.

𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘆 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘆𝗲𝘁

We enjoyed working with this very motivated patient with Cystic Acne and resultant scarring to get to his goal of this glow. After six months of treatment with an oral medication to address the severe active acne we then transitioned to collagen induction therapy via microneedling. These results are after only 3 treatments 😳, I thought I’d might take more but with his diligence and the right regimen we got it done.

𝐓𝐄𝐍 years ago today we opened the doors of Lenzy Dermatology & Loss Center.

And the funny thing is it was NOT my intention to start my own practice. In 2012, when I relocated to western MA, I joined a multi-specialty group & started up the Dermatology division at one of their locations. I quickly saw the difference between working for a Derm practice like I did in Boston and a large multi-specialty group. It was tough. I had 1.5 MAs and saw less patients and was more exhausted at the end of each day. After about a year, I knew something had to break.

Meanwhile, my former medical director told me they would not “allow” me the time off to go & present my research after I learned that my abstract was accepted at the World Congress for Hair Research which was in Scotland that year 😳. I informed that my patients would need to be rescheduled because I was going to the meetin‼️. I came home & prayed and God said it’s time to transition. 𝐈 𝐩𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐲 𝟒 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐝𝐚𝐲…𝐖𝐈𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐮𝐩.

I immediately started putting out feelers & interviewed with another large group & after 4 rounds of interviews, learned that they were closing due to financial mismanagement 😳. I then reached out to my former practice in Boston (which was based out of Atlanta) to see if they wanted to open up a location in western MA and I could run it like it did the Boston locations. They said yes and I went to work and found the perfect location . On the day that the CEO was supposed to fly in to sign the lease, he no-showed then went missing and did not return my calls 😳. I was like Lord what are you telling me. Then the owner of the building said, 𝐰𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐨𝐰𝐧. 𝐈’𝐥𝐥 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐝? I was like 😳. This was in January 2014. Three months later on 4/21, we saw our first patient at 1176 Memorial Dr. And 10 years later, we just saw our 50,000th patient 🙏🏽🙌🏾.

So grateful for all of the NOs, they were for my good. I really just had to trust Him.

This was one of my favorite lives. Ar the end we had an impromptu conversation about our journeys into Dermatologist , the challenges we faced, how we were discouraged, and how we overcame. We also had a great conversation about hair loss. Check in out on my IG.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but one of THEE most important parts of hair loss treatment is the MAINTENANCE PLAN.

Unfortunately many forms of hair loss are chronic conditions that require long term maintenance therapy. While we often don’t have to do the same level of treatment that was required to achieve the results, I put all of my patients on a maintenance plan to help keep them.

I love the analogy that my colleague said during her talk at the recent meeting as her response when asked “do I have to stay on treatment for the rest of my life”: When I stop wearing my glasses, I no longer have perfect vision, I have to continue wearing them to see.

Same thing with many forms of hair loss (like CCCA and Androgenetic Alopecia depicted here), weight loss management and a host of other chronic disease states which cannot be permanently cured with a course of treatment—-𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀.

Despite communicating this to patients, there are some patients who come back after going missing for some time stating that I stopped everything because I was doing great. 𝗨𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘆. But with consistency in sticking with your maintenance plan, which could consist of something as simple as applying a topical custom compound 2-3 times per week and more aggressive treatments as needed based on assessment at follow ups—it works!

This is another place where my partnership with hairstylists, that we have been doing for over 15 years, is clutch because it’s the stylists that will often pick up that the client is no longer doing their treatments based on what they see from behind the chair.
