Happy Pride! šŸ³ļøā€šŸŒˆšŸ³ļøā€āš§ļø

This month, every month, every week, every day.

If you have ever had the privilege of working with LGBTQ+ kids, you know how incredibly important Pride celebrations are. The difference it makes after they attend their first one. Seeing not only that they are not alone, but that there is also a community for them. It’s powerful, and it’s real.

I promise to continually do the work to create that sense of belonging at Counseling with Brooke, so there can be even more moments of ā€œSo I’m thinking about going to Prideā€¦ā€

Keep flying the flags. Keep cheering at the parades. Show up however you can.

Now let’s get out there and celebrate! šŸŽ‰

It’s Memorial Day Weekend and the official kickoff to summer!

Summer looms large in the minds of kids and teens as a time that is supposed to be absolutely amazing and fun from start to finish. But, erm, some of my busiest times in the office are late June and early July.

Why? Because by then, the newness of break has worn off. Kids may have no structure to their days and a lot of time to sit around and be in their own heads. As hard as school can be, it is a chance for social connection everyday. They may not have seen friends or peers for weeks. On top of that, they may be comparing what they are doing to what they see online as the summer they are ā€œsupposed to be having.ā€

So, a friendly reminder from your local kid therapist: find some ways to build in a teeny-tiny bit of structure into those lazy, hazy days (pretty please). It doesn’t have to be pricey day camps that are probably already full. It can mean weekly hang with friends, choosing a skill to learn, spending a certain amount of time each day outside, or just getting up at the same time each morning…okay, late morning. I’m totally in favor of decompressing before the school year. Let’s just strike a balance.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month! Although, this April was a doozy, and October is always ā€œRocktoberā€ at our office… and really every month should be about mental health. But I digress!

Mental health can be about self-care and habits. It can be about boundaries and support. It can be about the right medication. It’s definitely about equity and access. But a big, big part of mental health can be about šŸ’•šŸŒˆTHERAPYšŸŒˆšŸ’•

This is one of my favorite illustrations of what it’s like to be a therapist/ to work with one from

Yes, it’s hard to be a counselor, but it’s also an absolute privilege and a joy to work with someone to untangle what’s in their mind and form it into something new. And on the flip side, I couldn’t turn what’s going on in this brain into a nice knitted scarf without the help of my own therapist!

Be sure to be kind to your mind this month and every month, And maybe make that therapy appointment you’ve been putting off; you’ll be glad you did. šŸ™‚

A week and half later and I’m still reeling (get it?!) from the ACA annual conference. Already putting my new knowledge to use in sessions, sharing the resources I found with parents and colleagues, and getting excited about the next trainings to pursue. Oh, and the axolotl and capybara are BIG hits; there have been literal squeals. šŸ¤“

I know you've been dying for a CWB update; well, here's a big one:

I'm now accepting insurance!

There was a brief attempt to figure it out on my own; then I quickly remembered my skill set lies elsewhere.

I shopped around for the company that would be the best partner for my practice and landed on Headway!

I'm now in-network with Aetna, Anthem, Cigna, Carelon and Quest with more to come.

I'm thrilled about this next chapter and expanding the clients I can serve!

It’s March, friends!

In my mind, once we get through February, we’ve made it. The days get longer. You need a few less layers to leave the house. Spring break doesn’t seem so far away (for the kids, not the counselors). I even walked around the office between clients yesterday and spotted some signs of green.

But before spring fever takes over, I like to have my clients reflect on their winter ā€œdips,ā€ both big and small. What would have made it a little easier? What proactive steps could you take next year so it’s not quite so bad? What systems or habits could you put in place?

Then I usually make them record it somewhere because we know we will all forget these ideas by next January when the snow goes from pretty and serene to a gross nuisance.

Winter is a fact of life as long as you live on our area, so we might as well do something to make it a smidge better.

How about you? What makes these months more bearable? And what are looking forward to with spring?

For me it’s:
- Crockpot meals, knitting, crewneck sweatshirts
- The return of BASEBALL (Go Reds!)

Had an absolute blast leading a breakout session at the Empowered Learner Conference yesterday! Loved talking all things executive function with other professionals, specifically how to get kids to buy in to improving their own EF. My first ever conference presentation audience was engaged, thoughtful and most importantly laughed at all my jokes (kidding, mostly). Thanks Springer School and Center for a great day!

Just two weeks until the Empowered Learner Conference presented by with ! Two fab keynote speakers and 20 breakout sessions to choose from… including mine!

(Yes, the title is lovingly adapted from one of my most recommend books. All hail the queens Faber & Mazlish).

Understanding and caring about our executive function is critical for our success in school and beyond.

But, how do we get kids and teens to care? How do we make this meaningful to them? How do we make sure this isn’t another cringe advisory lesson they ignore at the end of the day? (Clients’ words, not mine).

My session is focused on principles and strategies to get them to buy in to this essential concept. I’m taking my 20+ years of experience getting kids to care about things they otherwise wouldn’t and passing that knowledge on!

Hope you can join on 2/13!
