Did we mention there’s farm animals? We will set up a circle of yoga mats under the big black walnut trees and learn how to effectively teach yoga classes and enjoyable calming exercises to kids…all while infusing your own creativity. If needed due to weather, we will be learning inside Gorman Heritage Farm Sunflower Room. This is a magical place with lots of great projects going on so we are grateful to partner with them again!

Some people prefer to use “you can do this” to encourage themselves from the viewpoint of an inner teacher. Others may prefer to say “I can do this,” as if they’re saying it to themselves. Text out which one feels better for you and don’t underestimate the power of that sentence; in the mirror, internally when you’re walking through a doorway, when you’re in the midst of a challenging situation.

Slowing down enough to notice our thoughts, in the same way we slow down enough to notice our breath, is the first step-then we can become more in control of them💛

Balance two concepts: 1. As a human we experience emotions 2. There are things we can do to calm ourselves down

This helps us communicate well and make clear decisions. One of the two concepts without the other doesn’t work!

And then ask your own kids; what do you like to do that makes you feel calm? Kids often have similar answers to adults; listening to music, swimming, drawing, lying down, being outside.

And learning about mindfulness and emotional regulation from a child’s perspective has its perks. I’ll be sharing more tid-bits from the lens of a kids yoga class along the way!

“Pull the imaginary string up on top of your head!” Is a lot more fun than, “Sit up tall.”

Posture is an important aspect of focus and meditation. Telling kids WHY you’re asking them to do something, no matter how small, is also an important aspect to working with children.

They can feel your respect for them when you add the simple “why.”

It also helps them learn:

🐝Place your shoes next to each other >>> so you can find them easily after class.
🐝Keep your voice at a 0 while I’m talking >>> so everyone can hear what I’m saying and the focus stays on me rather than your conversation
🐝Sit up tall>>>to let the energy run up and down your spine to your brain and help you focus

Our graduates always tell us that they knew it would be rewarding to share the gift of yoga with kids, but they didn’t realize HOW rewarding. It’s in the moments when they ask, “Are we going to do stillness stones again?” Or if they go into yoga apprehensive and leave class asking when you’ll be back. It’s moments like those that remind us how much children crave and benefit from adults who can guide them through a fun, calming experience to help them along their journey.

Students remember these classes for years and years because it’s something different that offsets the screen time, constant stimulus and demands of our everyday world.
