Massage Guns: More Than Just a Trend
You’ve probably seen massage guns everywhere, from gyms to physical therapy offices. But what are they actually doing?
Massage guns use rapid, repetitive pressure, often called percussive therapy, to stimulate muscles and other soft tissues. When used appropriately, they can be a great addition to your recovery routine.
Reducing Muscle Soreness
Percussive therapy may help relieve post-workout muscle soreness and stiffness, especially after strenuous activity.
Increasing Local Circulation
The rapid movement of the massage gun can temporarily increase blood flow to the area being treated, helping warm up the muscles.
Supporting Mobility & Flexibility
Using a massage gun before stretching or activity may help decrease feelings of stiffness and temporarily improve range of motion.
Pre- and Post-Workout Recovery
Before activity, a massage gun can help warm up targeted muscle groups. Afterward, it can be incorporated into a cool-down and recovery routine.
Relieving Muscular Tension
Percussive therapy can feel great on areas that commonly hold tension, such as the quads, hamstrings, calves, glutes, and upper back.
Remember: More pressure isn’t always better.
Massage guns should generally be used on soft tissue, not directly over bones, joints, the front or sides of the neck, injured areas, or areas with significant swelling or unexplained pain. Certain medical conditions and medications may also make percussive therapy inappropriate, so check with a qualified healthcare professional when in doubt.
At Jet Set Recovery, tools like percussion therapy can be incorporated into a session when appropriate, alongside hands-on massage, stretching, and other techniques to create a treatment tailored to your body.
