A month into school and the lunch box magic has already worn off. I see you, parents.

September is actually the perfect time to do a quiet nutrition reset β€” before the holiday treat season kicks in and before cold-and-flu season makes good eating even harder.

A few things our pediatric dietitian wants every parent to know:
Protein at lunch matters. It stabilizes blood sugar and helps kids focus through the afternoon slump.
Color = nutrients. The more variety, the broader the micronutrient coverage. Even one new color a week adds up.
Fiber-rich snacks (fruit, veggies, whole grains) support the gut and keep energy even.
Ultra-processed foods aren't the enemy β€” but when they dominate, mood and focus often take the hit.

If your child is a picky eater, has sensory food challenges, or you're just not sure if they're getting what they need β€” that's exactly what Zest's Pediatric Dietitian is here for. Through our ZAPS program, personalized nutrition support is built right into your child's care.

πŸ’¬ Wondering if your child's nutrition is where it should be and want to take a deep dive into nutrition for your child? Ask us about our ZAPS dietician.

Back-to-school season is exciting. It's also the time of year when parents need their pediatrician the most β€” and traditional practices make it the hardest to reach them.

Think about what September actually looks like for most families:
Your child comes home with a mystery cough on a Tuesday night β€” do you wait three days for an appointment or sit in urgent care for two hours?
Your kid is suddenly refusing school and you're not sure if it's anxiety, a friendship problem, or something medical.
You need a sports physical, a medication refill, or just someone to tell you whether that rash is contagious before you send them in tomorrow.

At Zest, none of those moments require a waiting room, a nurse triage line, or a three-day hold.

You text us. We answer. We figure it out together β€” whether that's a quick reassurance, a video call, or an same-day visit. No hoops. No hold music. Just your doctor, who already knows your child, ready to help.

That's not a luxury. That's just what pediatric care should have always looked like. And it's exactly why Zest families tell us September feels different β€” calmer, more confident, less alone.

Back-to-school season is full-on. Your pediatrician should be too.

πŸ’¬ New to Zest? There's no better time to join than before cold and flu season hits. Reach out today β€” we'd love to meet your family.

Raise your hand if your child is absolutely exhausted β€” even though school just started.

You're not imagining it. September is one of the most sleep-disrupted months of the year for kids.

Here's why: summer shifts their internal clock later. Even if you've been working on bedtime routines, the new schedule demands they wake earlier, process more socially and academically, and regulate their emotions all day long. That's a lot of neurological output.

Signs your child might be running a sleep deficit:
Hard to wake in the morning despite an early bedtime
Falling asleep in the car on the way home
More emotional or reactive than usual after school
Trouble focusing on homework or simple tasks

A consistent wind-down routine, screens off 60 minutes before bed, and a dark cool room go a long way. But if sleep has been a persistent challenge, know that Zest offers access to a Pediatric Sleep Consultant through our ZAPS program β€” personalized support beyond what we can cover in a single visit.

πŸ’¬ Struggling with your child's sleep? Ask us about ZAPS β€” our pediatric sleep specialist is just a referral away.

Fall is beautiful. Fall is also the beginning of runny nose season.

Every year around this time, we start getting the same question from parents: "How do I know if this is just a cold, the flu, or COVID?"

Here's a quick guide:
🌑️ Common Cold: gradual onset, runny nose, mild cough, no fever or low-grade fever. Kids feel "off" but not terrible.
🌑️ Flu: sudden onset, higher fever, body aches, fatigue, headache, sometimes nausea and stomachaches. Kids feel knocked down fast.
🌑️ COVID: can look like either β€” varies widely. Loss of taste/smell, GI symptoms, or fatigue may point toward COVID.

The honest truth? Symptoms overlap a lot. When in doubt β€” especially with high fever, difficulty breathing, or a child who looks really unwell β€” reach out to us first. We'd rather hear from you than have you guess.

And remember: at Zest, you can text, call, or video chat before ever needing to leave the house.

πŸ’¬ When your child gets sick this fall, skip the urgent care line. Text your Zest doctor directly and talk to someone who actually knows your kid.

It’s that time. Contact your Zest doctor to set up time to protect the entire family.

The influenza virus spreads easily and quickly in classrooms and on the playground. During flu season, the virus can sweep through a classroom and shut down learning. The annual flu shot helps your child’s immune system recognize and resist the virus so they can stay in school, go on playdates, and continue doing all the things they love. The AAP recommends annual flu vaccination starting at 6 months of age. Learn more and talk to your pediatrician with questions: https://bit.ly/3dLvPwm

September always sneaks up on us, doesn't it?

One week the kids are sleeping in and eating popsicles at noon β€” and the next, we're packing lunches at 6 a.m. and wondering why everyone is suddenly so cranky.

Here's what we want parents to know: that crankiness? It's real, and it's normal. The shift back to structure affects sleep cycles, digestion, mood, and behavior β€” sometimes all at once.

What to watch for in the first few weeks of fall:
More meltdowns or emotional outbursts than usual
Stomachaches in the morning (often anxiety, not illness)
Trouble falling asleep even when tired
Increased hunger or decreased appetite

Most kids adjust within 2–3 weeks. But if you're seeing persistent symptoms β€” or something just feels off β€” that's exactly what we're here for. At Zest, there's always time to talk it through.

πŸ’¬ Questions about your child's adjustment? Text us directly β€” no nurse triage line, no waiting. That's the Zest difference.

Concussion Awareness: What Every Athlete Must Know

Whether your child is 5 and just started soccer or 17 and playing varsity football β€” concussion awareness matters at every level.

Here's what Zest wants every sports family to know:
- You do NOT need to lose consciousness to have a concussion
- Symptoms can appear hours after the impact β€” not just immediately
- Young, developing brains (ages 5–17) take LONGER to recover than adult brains
- Returning to play too soon is dangerous at any age. Often, if you return too soon, your symptoms are likely to return AND can last for MONTHS!

Age-specific notes:
Elementary School: Can't always describe their symptoms β€” watch for behavior changes, clinginess, refusing to play, being more teary than usual.
Middle School: Peer pressure to 'tough it out' is real β€” teach them it's safe to speak up
High School: Academic pressure + concussion = a dangerous combination. Cognitive rest matters too.

Signs at any age: headache, confusion, nausea, light/noise sensitivity, mood changes, fatigue

If you suspect it β†’ remove from play, call us, do not return without physician clearance.

The Most Important School Supply You're Not Buying

Backpacks? βœ”οΈ
School supplies? βœ”οΈ
New shoes? βœ”οΈ

But the most important thing your child needs this school year isn't on a shopping listβ€”it's sleep.

As pediatricians, we see it every August: summer bedtimes linger, but school mornings come early. Sleep affects far more than energyβ€”it supports learning, memory, mood, immune health, and emotional regulation.

Zest's sleep recommendations by age:
Ages 5–9: 10–12 hours/night
Ages 10–12: 9–11 hours/night
Teens (13–17): 8–10 hours/night

A few simple tips:
βœ” Start shifting bedtime earlier nowβ€”10–15 minutes every few nights.
βœ” Turn off screens at least 60 minutes before bed.
βœ” Keep wake-up times consistent, even on weekends.

A well-rested child is better prepared to learn, grow, and thrive. If sleep has been a struggle, your Zest pediatrician is here to help.

Fall Sports Season: Is Your Child Ready?

From first-time soccer players to varsity athletes β€” fall sports season is here!

Here’s Zest’s pre-season checklist works across ages 5 to 17:
Sports physical DONE β€” required for school athletics (middle & high school), recommended for all ages
Hydration: kids 5–12 need 6–8 cups daily; teen athletes need significantly more β€” start before practice, not during
Heat acclimatization: bodies at EVERY age need 10–14 days to adjust to August practice temps β€” first two weeks should be lower intensity
Sleep: ages 5–12 need 9–11 hours; teens need 8–10 β€” sleep IS athletic performance
Protein at every meal β€” especially important for growing athletes ages 10–17
Concussion awareness: teach your child at every age what to report and that it's safe to speak up

The habits built before the season starts protect athletes all the way through.
Sports physicals available now β€” book before August fills!
