For some kids it will trigger separation anxiety, in addition to the anxiety they may feel about leaving their safe harbor from the pandemic. Parents are now tasked with the complicated mission of dealing with all this anxiety and uncertainty: reassuring children that it’s safe to be away from them, while also encouraging them to be careful and preparing them to be flexible in case the situation changes. How do you do that? Here are some pointers.

Heading back to school this fall might trigger separation anxiety for kids. Here's how to help them cope, no matter what the school year brings.

In this excerpt adapted from Pause and Reset: A Parent’s Guide to Preventing and Overcoming Problems With Gaming, Nancy M. Petry, PhD, offers guidance on how to effectively limit gaming to a healthy level. Whether the goal is to prevent a child’s gaming from becoming excessive, or to roll back play that seems out of control, Dr. Petry offers practical, parent-tested strategies for getting a handle on the role of video games in your child’s life.

To prevent or overcome a child's problems with video games, combine healthy limits on screen time with rewarding non-screen activities.

Cleveland Integrative Counseling is now offering SPACE. SPACE is a short term parent-based treatment option that reduces childhood anxiety. SPACE teaches parents how to develop a supportive role rather than accommodating their child’s anxiety (and subsequently strengthening it), all while restoring their child’s autonomy. SPACE offers a practical solution for parents of children with anxious childhood emotions such as OCD, panic disorder, separation anxiety, and specific phobias, that are unable/willing to attend treatment themselves or in compliment to a child's on-going therapy. If you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment, please call or email 216 600 8008 [email protected]

I recently attended a training at Yale with Dr. Eli Lebowitz, associate director of the Anxiety and Mood Disorders Program at the Yale Child Study Center and lead author of the SPACE technique.
