🧡 TEAM CAPTAIN SPOTLIGHT: JERRY & EILEEN CHIAT 🧡

For more than 12 years, Jerry and Eileen Chiat have turned a life-changing kidney journey into a commitment to helping others.

Jerry’s journey began after a serious health emergency led to dialysis three times a week for a year. When he learned he was a candidate for a kidney transplant, Eileen stepped forward to become a living donor. Although she wasn’t a direct match for Jerry, her willingness to donate helped make a paired kidney donation possible.

On May 24, 2012, Jerry received his lifesaving kidney transplant. After surgery, he had the incredible opportunity to meet his donor, Peggy. In her honor, Jerry named his new kidney “Peggy,” and the two have remained friends. 🧡

That experience inspired Jerry and Eileen to dedicate themselves to helping others. For more than a decade, they have volunteered, advocated for kidney patients and organ donation, shared their story with others, and helped answer questions for those navigating kidney disease and transplantation.

Today, they continue that mission as part of the Kidney Walk community, encouraging others to learn about kidney health, transplantation, and the lifesaving impact of organ donation.

We’re proud to spotlight Jerry & Eileen and grateful for the passion and dedication they bring to our Kidney Walk family. 👟🧡

🧡 TEAM CAPTAIN TUESDAY 🧡

This week, we’re proud to spotlight Team Captains Andrew & Faith Redmond of Team Keeping It Renal!

Andrew was diagnosed with Stage 3 kidney disease at just 31 years old in January 2020; his kidney journey has included declining kidney function, beginning dialysis in December 2022, and currently being listed for a kidney transplant at the University of Maryland.

This year marks their first Kidney Walk, and they’re stepping up not only as walkers, but as Team Captains committed to raising funds, spreading awareness, and supporting others throughout the kidney community.

💬 Why do they walk?

“We are walking for those that can’t. We are walking for those that the NKF helps every day with their numerous programs.”

For Team Keeping It Renal, every step and every dollar raised helps NKF continue providing education, advocacy, resources, and support to kidney patients and their families.

Their message to others thinking about getting involved:

🧡 “Don’t be afraid to sign up and get out there! You’ll never know the support you could have if you don’t ask!”

Thank you to Keeping It Renal for turning your personal kidney journey into a mission to help others. We’re so grateful to have you walking with us!

In 2022, during an appointment with his primary care doctor, Jeff learned his kidney function was in decline and was told he was ultimately going to need a kidney transplant. Though Jeff was aware he had chronic kidney disease, he was floored to learn how quickly he found himself in this position. Jeff was 44 years old at the time, with two children and a wife who depended on him. Fear washed over Jeff every day until he received the news that he would be getting a kidney from an altruistic donor.

Jeff's donor, Robin, saw his plea on social media and felt instantly committed to helping. She said she could see her own family in his. Robin's husband was apprehensive when she told him she wanted to donate one of her kidneys to a complete stranger. Robin told her husband, “This man needs to see his kids graduate, and walk them down the aisle.” It was then that she received her husband’s full support.

Jeff received his kidney transplant last year and has gained a bonus family. His wife, Jen, along with Robin and Kevin, are in the process of starting a nonprofit organization to raise awareness and educate the public about kidney transplantation. Please join them at the Delaware Kidney Walk on Sunday, September 20th at Cape Henlopen State Park!
