A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA ®) will hold its regular re-assessment of the Public Safety Division of the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities Office of Mental Health February 17 through 19, 2026.
As part of the re-assessment, agency employees and the public are invited to offer comments via an online feedback portal, https://cimrs2.calea.org/919.
CALEA accredited law enforcement agencies must comply with professional standards in the following areas: policy and procedures, administration, operations, and support services. To maintain accreditation, law enforcement agencies must undergo re-accreditation every four years to ensure continued compliance with CALEA standards.
Verification by the Assessment Team that the BHDD OMH Public Safety meets CALEA standards as part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation – a highly prized recognition of law enforcement excellence. The BHDD OMH Division of Public Safety has been CALEA accredited since 2018.
Law enforcement practitioners from similar agencies in other states will review written materials, interview individuals, and observe BHDD OMH facilities to observe compliance practices. Once the assessors complete a review of the division, they will report to the full Commission, which will then decide if BHDD OMH Public Safety will be granted re-accreditation.
The BHDD OMH Division of Public Safety is the law enforcement entity for the BHDD OMH and has statewide jurisdiction. The Division employs sworn officers and has specific responsibilities for coordinating law enforcement, fire and life safety, and security programs within the Office, and also performs as BHDD OMH first responders, as necessary. The Division enforces state laws and protects BHDD OMH property, patients, employees, and visitors.
