As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, the need for accurate information, appropriate treatment, and quality mental health care continues.

Mental health is being talked about everywhere right now, and that’s a good thing. Mental health is a part of our overall health.

After nearly 30 years as a licensed clinical social worker, I’ve watched conversations around mental health evolve, for better and for worse.

Stigma has decreased. More people are willing to seek help.
More conversations are happening openly.
In many spaces, mental health challenges and treatment have become more normalized.

With this progress we have also seen a rise in misinformation, oversimplification, and guidance from individuals who are not trained or qualified to provide mental health treatment.

From viral TikTok posts to influencers, podcast personalities, self-proclaimed experts, and everyday social media commentary, people are constantly consuming mental health content.

There is more information available than ever before.

Some of it is helpful. Some of it increases awareness.
Some of it helps people feel less alone.

But quite honestly, much of it is misguided.

Well-spoken advice is not the same thing as mental health treatment.
A relatable story, a powerful quote, or something that “sounds right” does not automatically make it clinically sound or appropriate for your specific situation.

Terms like “narcissistic,” “bipolar,” “trauma,” “triggered,” “manic,” and “gaslighting” are now regularly used in everyday conversation — often inaccurately and without clinical understanding.

At best, these labels are attempts to describe an experience or behavior.
But noticing a behavior is only the beginning.
A symptom is not a diagnosis.

Awareness matters. But awareness without clarity can become dangerous.

During Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week (May 3-9th), our partnership with the Children’s Mental Health Matters Campaign was a reminder of something I’ve witnessed throughout more than 30 years in this field:
The impact of children’s mental health doesn’t end in childhood. It follows individuals into adulthood, relationships, families, and the workplace.

When I began my work providing mental health services to children, I was drawn to the opportunity to support healing early, helping children develop the emotional tools, resilience, and support systems needed to navigate life in healthier ways.

These were children with developmental, emotional, and physical disabilities. Children impacted by trauma, abuse, anxiety, depression, and life circumstances that significantly affected their daily functioning and sense of safety.

Now, decades later…
many of those children are adults learning how to manage careers, relationships, parenting, stress, and the responsibilities that come with adulthood, while still carrying experiences that began long before their first job.

Even the people we care for most can leave us feeling exhausted, unseen, or unsure.
It’s okay to admit that. It doesn’t mean you’re failing. It means you’re human.

The Valentine’s Reset Bundle is a quiet space for reflection... 3 guided PDFs to help you slow down, notice what’s happening in your heart, and care for yourself while caring for others.

No pressure. No fixing anyone.

Thanksgiving can be a beautiful time of connection, but it can also stir up stress, old memories, and emotional overwhelm—especially for those doing their best to hold it all together.

If this week feels heavier than expected, give yourself permission to slow down. The most meaningful moments often come from simple things: a quiet pause, a kind word, or letting go of expectations that don’t fit your reality.

Wherever you find yourself this holiday, we’re wishing you comfort, and moments of real rest.

Happy Thanksgiving from the Milestones family.

Everyone is carrying something you can’t see!

Today on World Kindness Day, take a moment to show someone a little extra grace. It can make a bigger difference than you think.

🇺🇸 Honoring Our Veterans 🇺🇸

Today, we pause to honor the brave men and women who have served our country with strength, courage, and commitment.

At Milestones Counseling, we understand that the journey of military life brings many transitions — not only at the end of service but throughout every deployment, relocation, and return home. Each chapter can bring both pride and challenge.

To all Veterans and military families: we see you, we honor you, and we thank you for your service and sacrifice. 💙

✨ Supporting Every Child’s Right to a Safe Childhood ✨

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and at Milestones, we know that safe environments are the foundation for child development. This means not only preventing violence, but also providing compassionate, trauma-informed support to children and families who have been impacted. Take note of the ways domestic violence impact children.

In discussing domestic and dating violence, we often overlook their far-reaching impacts on the most vulnerable people involved: children. Young individuals who may witness or experience violence first hand endure profound consequences that ripple through every aspect of their lives. Highlighting do...
