Maryland Celebrates Designation as an Age-Friendly State

On July 28, AARP and the Maryland Department of Aging () announced that has officially designated Maryland as an Age-Friendly State. This prestigious honor marks an important milestone in the rollout of the state's Longevity Ready Maryland (LRM) multisector plan for aging. By joining AARP’s Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities, Maryland is actively championing a society where older residents are celebrated as essential drivers of our economy, culture, and social vitality.

“Maryland's designation as an Age-Friendly State reflects the power of local leadership and statewide collaboration,” said Howard County Office on Aging and Independence Administrator (OAI) Ofelia Ross Ott. “By working together across communities, we are helping turn the vision of Longevity Ready Maryland into meaningful action, creating places where people of every age can live longer live longer lives full of health and purpose.”

What a wonderful story. Love the intention and purpose!

"Tapping in front of an audience is “exciting and scary”, Walsh says. He is currently learning Anything Goes from the Cole Porter musical to perform for fellow residents. “We danced it [in rehearsal] and at the end we burst out laughing. It was pretty faultless. There’s that buzz of it coming together. When we’re coordinated, we hear it. It’s not a clatter – we’re tapping in time.”"

Stephen Walsh was such a workaholic that none of his colleagues would believe he’d ever leave. But then he learned to dance and he’s now part of a dazzling tap troupe

Happy Independence Day, America. 250 years free!

Be sure to stay cool today. Note that because of today's heat, the schedule for firework celebrations at the Downtown Columbia Lakefront now kicks off at 7 p.m. instead of 5. For the full revised schedule, visit:

https://www.howardcountymd.gov/july-4th-fireworks

"Due to the National Weather Service’s Extreme Heat Warning for Howard County and the risk of high heat index values, the Howard County July 4th celebration will begin two hours later than originally scheduled. The festivities will now kick off at 7:00 pm. Food trucks begin service at 7pm and Dom Flemons & The Traveling Wildfires will provide live music from 7:30 - 9pm. The 25+ minute Firework display is anticipated to begin between 9:15pm and 9:30pm weather permitting. "
