"To encounter God means embracing downward mobility, and often the simple, powerful, and ultimate Christian ministry of presence."

This quote is from Henri Nouwen, a Catholic priest who died 30 years ago yesterday. Henri was a gifted theologian and teacher, serving at prestigious universities throughout America including Notre Dame, Yale and Harvard. Yet the place that influenced Henri most in his life was the opposite of the status and influence he enjoyed at those universities.

In 1986, he accepted a position as Pastor among a community of people with development disabilities. He served and lived there until his death in 1996. He considered it his greatest accomplishment.

Father Henri Nouwen's life is a reminder of the power of simply "being with" people. For us who serve in this ministry, this means "being with" our clients and them "being with" us. What a gift.

"Let me know if you need anything" is kind, but it puts the work back on them. Try this instead:

Bring over a meal, no explanation needed.
Offer to sit with their loved one for an hour so they can leave the house.
Pray for them and send a text to let them know you’re thinking of them.

Small, specific acts of love go a long way.

One young man we get to care for loves getting his hands in the dirt. This summer he was excited to get to help some of our team members landscape at one of the houses we manage.

The movement, fresh air, and sense of purpose that comes from being able to help out made for a memorable day together.

Small moments like this remind us why home matters.

Caregiving is one of the most demanding jobs there is. It's okay to admit when you're running on empty.

A few signs it might be time to ask for help:

You feel irritable more often than usual.
You've lost interest in things you used to enjoy.
You're not sleeping well.
You feel alone, even around others.

Needing rest doesn't mean you're failing; it means you're human. Allow yourself to take the rest you need.

Caregiving often happens where no one sees it: the early mornings, the quiet patience, and the moments no one claps for. But nothing done in love is ever wasted or unseen.

"Your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you." (Matthew 6:4)
