We all want to maintain our independence as we age, but what do we have to do to reach that?

Movement is a huge part of the picture. Yes genetics and luck play a role but much of our independence as we age is tied to our ability to move ourselves and move objects; a couch, opening a jar, walking up the stairs, carrying groceries in from the car.

It doesn’t take hours every week, but it does take starting with where you are at now and continuing to progress over time.

Recently, we worked with a client on helping them prepare for a hike in the Rockies, but that strength they built over twelve weeks isn’t going to go away, because they’ve built a habit and they don’t want to lose it and they know that right now they are setting the stage for the next twenty years.

How do we get back to the activities we enjoy after back pain whether it’s lasted weeks or years?

We start with what you can do.

Sometimes that’s literally sitting in a chair and slowly rotating the spine from side to side.

Sometimes it’s holding a band and pressing it out while not moving the spine at all.

Sometimes it’s full rotation of the spine with a heavy band that if you did this weeks or months ago it would have aggravated it, but it doesn’t now because we worked up to it.

That’s why this week’s Movement of the Week is a Pallof Press with rotation.

It’s a phenomenal movement that works on building strength through rotation, it’s a movement that many people can benefit from especially when working to improve the ability and confidence to rotate the spine.

Life gets busy. Workouts get missed. It happens to all of us.

That doesn’t mean the day is lost. Short bursts of hard effort, 20 seconds to a few minutes at a time, add up.

The research calls them exercise snacks. In two large studies of adults who didn’t exercise at all, 3 to 4 vigorous minutes a day was associated with substantially lower mortality risk.

Take the stairs fast. Do sit-to-stands while the coffee brews. Push the pace for one minute of your walk.

Exercise snacks aren’t a replacement for a workout, but they can help maintain what you’ve built. And if you’re just getting started, they can make a real difference in your health.

Something always counts.

Movement of the Week
The Hip Hinge

We do it everyday when picking stuff up off the ground, but we can lose this ability if we don’t keep doing it.

That’s why the hip hinge is the movement of the week and a movement you should start incorporating into your weekly movement routine.

Give the hip hinge a try and see how easy or hard it is to do this movement.

Your care is dependent on the context of your life.

If your practitioner doesn’t understand the context of your life, your goals, your history, what has and hasn’t worked — how are you going to get the care you deserve?

This is why your initial meeting with a practitioner is so important. They need to understand you and you need to understand them and their approach.

You need to ask questions and have them answered, and they need to take the time to do so.

Before moving forward with care with any practitioner or trainer, you need to establish a working and respectful relationship that the care can build upon.

When it comes to our health we cannot control everything.

But we can control a few key things. It takes time and it takes effort but the benefits of walking, adding intensity overtime and strength training have the potential to change the trajectory of our health.

For many of us pain or the fear of making an old injury worse keeps us from engaging in these activities, that is why at Optimize our goal is to understand where you’ve been and where you want to go.

This allows us to work with you through the fear, through, the pain and help provide you the tools to manage your pain, get stronger, and gain confidence to return to the activities you love.

You can drastically impact your health, our goal is to uncomplicate that journey for you.

Kettlebell Marches

A phenomenal movement that nearly everyone can do and keep making harder.

Lower back pain — kettlebell marches.
Balance — kettlebell marches.
More confidence on your feet — kettlebell marches.
Conditioning for a hiking trip — kettlebell marches.

This movement is specifically beneficial because it helps us train two primary demands: staying steady on one leg, and carrying load through your trunk.

That’s what the march trains and it’s why it’s a great movement for many different people.

Like all movements, it’s not the end-all be-all. For any single adaptation, there are dozens of exercises that do it better.

What’s hard to find is this much range in one movement. Marching in place with no weight is a real starting point, and a barbell on the back will still be challenging for the strongest reading this post.

Lastly, if you’re coming back from pain or discomfort, the march is one of the gentlest ways to expose the trunk to load again, often the first step back to moving with confidence.

“What are a few easy things I can do for my health?”

Here are the answers.

1. Fiber — 25 to 38 grams a day. Only about 4% of us get there.

2. Walking — measured against 2,000 steps a day, risk starts dropping around 2,500 steps. Around 7,100 steps, 51% fewer cardiovascular events. Around 8,800 steps, 60% lower all-cause mortality. Past 10,000 the benefits level off.

3. Add Intensity after a few weeks of walking— 3 to 4 minutes hard, then ease off for 3-4 minutes. Repeat 3 to 4 rounds.

4. Strength — 2 days a week. 2 to 3 moderate sets for each major muscle group.

5. Protein — 1.2 to 1.5 grams per kilogram of body weight per day.

6. Sleep — 7 to 9 hours.

7. Social connection — across 148 studies, people with strong social relationships lived longer.

All of these individually make a difference but when combined thats when the biggest changes occur.

Don’t feel like you have to start all at once, pick the most doable then add each over time.

Woke up today and my voice is gone and my lower back is tight.

Here is what I will do a few times throughout the day to help keep my lower back loose and more comfortable as I work with clients throughout the day.

This is pretty much my go to movement flow for myself when this randomly occurs.

When working with a client and learning about how their musculoskeletal system responds there are usually a few movements that consistently help them when that random discomfort appears. Sometimes these movements are similar client to client and sometimes they aren’t.

Personalized care should be personalized. That’s what what we do at Optimize Chiropractic.

If you’re wanting to get back to the activities you love but pain, discomfort or fear is holding you back give us a call to schedule your complimentary consultation and we’ll work with you to help you get back to what you love.
