People usually think summer is the “slower season.” Most independent pharmacy owners know that’s not always true. Vacation schedules make staffing tighter. Inventory starts shifting around. Cash flow gets a little more stressful. And before long, pharmacies are already thinking ahead to flu season again.

A lot of this pressure stays behind the scenes, while teams still show up every day, trying to keep things running smoothly for patients. If summer has been feeling heavier than expected lately, you’re definitely not the only one. This industry becomes easier to navigate when pharmacies stay connected and stop trying to carry everything themselves.

Records don’t keep you compliant. The systems behind them do.

Many independent pharmacies already have the documentation they need for DSCSA compliance. The challenge is making sure those records are:

✔ Current
✔ Complete
✔ Easy to locate
✔ Understood by your team

Compliance isn’t about rushing to find paperwork when someone asks for it. It’s about having the right routines in place so your pharmacy is ready every day.

Prepared pharmacies don’t just keep records— they build systems that support confidence, consistency, and independence.

Independent pharmacies make important decisions every day. The hard part is what those decisions are based on. Without clear visibility into your data, it is difficult to see what drives margin, how contracts compare, and where adjustments are needed.

The pharmacies that feel more in control can spot issues before they become problems. If you want more clarity, visit our website to see how Montana Family Pharmacies helps independents get a clearer view of their numbers and performance.

More than 10 years after the Drug Supply Chain Security Act became law, many independent pharmacy owners are still asking the same question:

What are we actually required to have in place right now? The confusion is fair. DSCSA timelines have shifted, exemptions have created different deadlines for different dispenser types, and Enhanced Drug Distribution Security requirements can feel like one more moving target in an already overloaded pharmacy operation.

But DSCSA compliance is not something to leave for the last minute. Your mid-year check-in should include documentation and processes for:

* Working only with authorized trading partners
* Maintaining drug tracing records
* Verifying product identifiers when required
* Investigating suspect or illegitimate products
* Keeping DSCSA policies, procedures, and staff training updated

For larger or non-exempt dispensers, Enhanced Drug Distribution Security requirements are already active. For small dispensers covered by FDA exemptions, the current deadline to fully comply is November 27, 2026.

MFP Plus and VIP members get access to DSCSA guidance, staff training materials, implementation checklists, and support from our compliance and regulatory team so these requirements feel less overwhelming and more manageable.

If your independent pharmacy needs more clarity around DSCSA, now is the time to connect with Montana Family Pharmacies and explore the membership tier that fits your pharmacy.

PBM reform passing doesn’t mean the pressure suddenly disappeared for independent pharmacies.

A lot of owners are still dealing with tight margins, confusing contracts, reimbursement pressure, and constant operational stress every day. The headlines may change, but the reality inside pharmacies still feels difficult for many.

That’s why more independents are realizing they can’t do this alone anymore. The pharmacies staying strongest right now are staying connected, sharing insights, and learning from each other. Policy wins do matter, but what happens after the headlines matters too.

Inventory issues often go unnoticed until they become serious. Over-ordering ties up cash, while under-ordering leads to missed opportunities. Small inefficiencies across NDC's quickly accumulate.

Most independent pharmacies aren’t ignoring inventory, but they often lack the time or visibility to manage it consistently.

Conversely, pharmacies with tighter controls review patterns more frequently, base adjustments on actual data rather than habits, and view purchasing as an ongoing effort rather than a set-it-and-forget-it task.

It’s not about perfection but about being more intentional and proactive.
