More than 10 years after the Drug Supply Chain Security Act became law, many independent pharmacy owners are still asking the same question:
What are we actually required to have in place right now? The confusion is fair. DSCSA timelines have shifted, exemptions have created different deadlines for different dispenser types, and Enhanced Drug Distribution Security requirements can feel like one more moving target in an already overloaded pharmacy operation.
But DSCSA compliance is not something to leave for the last minute. Your mid-year check-in should include documentation and processes for:
* Working only with authorized trading partners
* Maintaining drug tracing records
* Verifying product identifiers when required
* Investigating suspect or illegitimate products
* Keeping DSCSA policies, procedures, and staff training updated
For larger or non-exempt dispensers, Enhanced Drug Distribution Security requirements are already active. For small dispensers covered by FDA exemptions, the current deadline to fully comply is November 27, 2026.
MFP Plus and VIP members get access to DSCSA guidance, staff training materials, implementation checklists, and support from our compliance and regulatory team so these requirements feel less overwhelming and more manageable.
If your independent pharmacy needs more clarity around DSCSA, now is the time to connect with Montana Family Pharmacies and explore the membership tier that fits your pharmacy.
