Believe it or not, major events like the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup can sometimes impact pharmacy operations in surrounding regions.

Big international events often affect transportation, staffing, ordering timelines, and product demand, especially near host cities and nearby distribution centers. So for independent pharmacies, this is a good reminder to think ahead before things get busy.

Now may be a good time to:
• Review fast-moving inventory
• Prepare for increased travel medication demand
• Look ahead at cycle fills and sync programs
• Communicate early with patients
• Avoid last-minute ordering issues

It’s also important to stay cautious with controlled substance ordering and make sure your team is current on any state guidance related to out-of-country prescriptions. The pharmacies that stay strongest long-term are usually the ones preparing early, not reacting late.

Last month, we talked about what happens when the DEA first arrives at your pharmacy and how important it is to be ready and have a plan. Once credentials are verified and the Notice of Inspection (DEA Form 82) is acknowledged, the inspection officially begins.

During an inspection, DEA personnel may:
- Meet with staff who handle controlled substances
- Tour areas where controlled substances are stored
- Review controlled substance policies, procedures, and records
- Conduct physical counts of controlled substances
- And more

Planning and organization are the most critical steps pharmacies can take to prepare. Well-prepared owners and managers understand that not only should regulatory records be organized, easily retrievable, and accurate, but staff should be informed, trained, and prepared as well. Staff should know how to respond when inspectors arrive, which staff members take the lead, what to expect during an inspection, and how to communicate and interact with inspectors. Ensuring staff greets inspectors with kindness and respect can be the difference between a good inspection and one that goes awry.

A simple but important reminder: staff should remain calm, answer questions truthfully and concisely, and avoid guessing or volunteering information beyond what is asked.
