For Rachel Lapidus

For Rachel Lapidus On July 27th, 2011 Rachel went into Cardiac Arrest. We were told Rachel would never walk or talk again. Look at her now! This all changed on July 27th 2011.

Rachel was a perfectly healthy 19 year old girl. She had graduated high school and was in college full time plus working a full time job. She had a boyfriend and drove a nice little yellow convertible. Rachel has always been a loving person growing up. Especially to her little brother who she always had an awesome bond with. She loves people, she loves animals, and would go out of her way to try t

o help who ever and where ever she could. Rachel had dreams of being a Special Education teacher and all this was taken away one July night. While in the middle of a heated argument with her cousin Rachel all of a sudden stiffened up and dropped. her heart just stopped. We performed CPR within 4 minutes of the incident but Rachel's heart did not start up for almost 9 minutes. Because of this Rachel is suffering from an Anoxic Brain Injury (Lack of Oxygen). When this first happened we were told there was no chance for quality of life because she was down too long. As parents, you would not want to hear something like that about your child. So we fought for her survival with her. We pushed for rehab and after almost a week of arguing with the doctors and Insurance companies finally, Rachel was moved to Rehab Hospitals of Indiana. This approval from the Insurance company was for 3 days. 72 days later Rachel walked out of that rehab and her recovery still continues today. Rachel is a miracle and continues to amaze the doctors who we are all trying to prove wrong. Rachel now has an amazing opportunity ahead of her. Rachel qualifies for HBOT Therapy. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment which enhances the body's natural healing process by inhalation of 100% oxygen in a total body chamber, where atmospheric pressure is increased and controlled. It is used for a wide variety of treatments usually as a part of an overall medical care plan. Under normal circumstances, oxygen is transported throughout the body only by red blood cells. With HBOT, oxygen is dissolved into all of the body's fluids, the plasma, the central nervous system fluids, the lymph, and the bone and can be carried to areas where circulation is diminished or blocked. In this way, extra oxygen can reach all of the damaged tissues and the body can support its own healing process. The increased oxygen greatly enhances the ability of white blood cells to kill bacteria, reduces swelling and allows new blood vessels to grow more rapidly into the affected areas. It is a simple, non-invasive and painless treatment. After the phone consult we were told that RACHEL IS TREATABLE! Her cognitive problems, speech problems, even some of the physical problems are all treatable with HBOT

As parents, after what we have been through to hear those words and would again do ANYTHING we can to make this happen so we are asking for you to help be the miracle for Rachel Lapidus. She spent 10 days on full life support and 72 days in intensive inpatient rehab at Rehab Hospital of Indianapolis. She now faces years of outpatient rehab to regain basic self-care skills. Rachel's parents, Randy and Robin Lapidus, have been working very hard with Rachel and their efforts are paying off. Even though Rachel has a long way to go, her recovery so far has been miraculous. Help support the Lapidus family in their time of need. You can donate by going to www.gofundme.com/MiracleForRachel

Rachel had a fun time with REACH today. She loved going to the Tipton Lakes yard sales and to Starbucks.
She found a cool Halloween puzzle at the yard sales, and enjoyed a sugar free Lemonade at Starbucks. She told me she ordered the sugarfree on her own. She is usually good at ordering sugarfree drinks without being reminded.

This evening we had a busy time on the truck. We ran our route then took care of Terrace Lake Church VBS. Rachel was a great help and took care of most of the kids that wanted things from the freezer.
By the end of the evening she said she was doing peopling and just wanted a slice of pizza and her bed.
I don't think she was awake more than 30 minutes once she hit the pillow. She's getting rested up for another fun day tomorrow at the Princes Lakes Runmage sale/Vendor Market tomorrow morning and the movie in the park tomorrow night.

Rachel took her time getting up this morning, amd even tried to talk us into letting her go back to bed after breakfast. Thankfully that wasn't a fight once I reminded her we had to take Abby to the vet at 10:30. She quickly changed her mind and was ready to go with me to the vet. Abby in the other hand wasn't as excited. She had went outside with Cami this morning because she thinks she's a dog. Cami came in, Abby had other plans. Randy went out to find her, and checked all her normal hang out spots. We aren't sure where she was but eventually she came wondering down the sidewalk. She grumbled in the cr all the way. Rachel said it sounded like she was saying, "NOOOO NOOOO.", and Rachel was telling her it was OK, we all have to go to the Dr, shots only hurt for a second.
Abby did well, even though she was climbing and sniffing on every inch of the office, and Rachel said she was trying to escape.
After the vey Rachel relaxed for little bit before we headed out to Independence Village to serve ice cream to the residents and staff. Rachel loves seeing the older people getting excited about the ice cream truck just like the kids in the neighborhoods.
We also ran our Thursday route which Rachel also enjoyed. She was telling me what some customers would order as we pulled up to their homes, and was so proud of herself when she was right.

Rachel's getting a good night sleep tonight so she can be rested up for the REACH outing tomorrow.

Rachel was ready to get to Walmart this morning just like I predicted. She did let us get our orders for ice dream placed before we headed to the store.
We did well with sticking to our list while we shopped and even made it a pretty quick trip. Rachel said we needed to have enough time for getting things put away at home, and have lunch because Cami had a vet appointment .
When we took Cami to the vet Rachel did a good job holding on to the leash while I filled out paperwork and when it was time to pay. Even when Cami tried to pull on the leash to get over to investigate the dog food bags. Rachel was able to pull her back.

This evening we had fun on our route. Rachel was chatting away and loved hearing about one of our regulars vacation they just came back from.

Rachel was out soon after supper tonight. She's getting rested up for a fun day at REACH.

Rachel was looking forward to going to Bass Pro Shop today so she was pretty easy to get up and moving this morning.

This afternoon Dad picked Rachel up and she wanted to come ride with me in the ice cream truck.
They found me in Mccullough's Run, and Rachel hopped right in.
She said it was kind of boring at Bass Pro Shop, but she did get a cool shirt and a keychain with her name on it. I asked her where she had lunch and at first she couldn't remember. I started asking her questions, like "What did you eat?", "Did they only have chicken?", "Do we have one in Columbus?". She finally remembered it was Steak n Shake.
On the ice cream truck Rachel was having a good time chatting with people and getting treats from the freezer. She also answered my phone a couple times, and did a good job relaying messages.
By the time we got home Randy had supper ready and Rachel said she was starving. We always worry we will have a battle over what we are having but, that seems to be a thing of the past lately.

Tomorrow Rachel already has planned our morning. She has a couple things she needs from Wal-Mart. Since the dog has a vet appointment after lunch, we are going to Walmart right after breakfast. With that being said that also means Rachel will probably be up early wanting to get the day started.

As you can see Rachel had a fun day at BnD Farm Sanctuary today. She was loving on as many animals as she could and informed me it doesn't hurt when a duck nibbles your finger.
She also spotted some pigs similar to the one pictured. She said, "OH look they have KuneKune pigs." I had no clue ot that was the actual breed of a pig so I not only looked it up but asked someone at the sanctuary just to verify that was what they were. She was right and said "Mom, I know my animals. I learned that from watching Dr Pol." Mind you she hasn't watched that show in over a year so that's pretty good information retention.

By the time we got home Rachel just wanted to relax until supper time. She wasn't up much later tonight, she told me being outside with all those animals wore her out.

I'm sure she will be up early in the morning ready for a fun day on a REACH outing.

Another fun day in Rachel's books.
She had a great time at the Farmers Market and lived visiting with everyone. She has become very confident in herself and loves to wonder the market, petting as many dogs as possible, visiting with friends, and of course making sure to grab a Lemonade from Lemonade Bros.

This afternoon she had just as much fun on the truck while we ran a route. She got to play with a miniature dachshund, and a pug mix (we both forgot what the mix was). She also got to see friends we haven't seen in a while since Randy usually runs the Saturday afternoon route.

Rachel is all settled in bed, looking forward to going to BND Farm Sanctuary tomorrow with the ice cream truck for Waffles the pigs birthday.

Just a quick note tonight...

Rachel had a fun day as usual at REACH. She did say she had a run in with another participant but the staff quickly took care of it.
This evening Rachel had a good time on the ice cream truck. She chatted with some regulars and got to meet a couple new puppies along the way.
After the route we had to run to walmart for dog food. As we walked in the store Rachel heard several young kids screaming and crying and she said "Let's be fast, I'm done peopling tonight." We did stop and chat with an old friend we haven't seen in a while. Rachel chatted away just like she had seen him yesterday though.

Tomorrow is the Farmers Market and Rachel is looking forward to seeing lots of friends.

Rachel had a pretty quiet day. She helped with the animals this morning, making sure they were all fed and had plenty of water. She always checks the fish tank to make sure all 3 fish are still swimming and announces, "No floaters!"

This evening we had a fun time on thebice cream truck. We got the route done a little early so we made a stop at Fire Station #1 so they could have ice cream. Rachel was very surprised when she saw her favorite EMT Brian Bailey come out. Brian is the emt that worked on Rachel when she had her cardiac arrest. He holds a special place in our hearts and Rachel tells everyone about him.
We enjoyed chatting with the whole crew while they enjoyed their ice cream.
After we got the truck cleaned up and had supper Rachel was ready for bed. She said she was tired but here it is almost 11 and she is still talking. I'm assuming she will be a little slow getting up in the morning.

05/28/2026

Ra hel was slow getting up this morning and said she was still tired from the zoo. She did get moving and had plenty of time to get ready for REACH.

When I went to pick Rachel up she was pretty giggly, which meant she was getting tired. She said they had a good day, and went to check put a new shop, but it isn't open yet, so they went to one of the thrift stores instead. Im sure they will get to Hidden Treasures Finders Keepers soon though.

Rachel relaxed this evening and called it a night shortly after supper. Hopefully she gets a good night's sleep and is ready for a fun day tomorrow afternoon on our route.
