Understanding prognosis and those factors that delay recovery or detract from full return to sport allow us to set realistic expectations with our athletes.
This excellent paper by .serner and colleagues sought to identify radiological and clinical examination factors associated with time to return to sport in athletes following acute adductor injury.
While several factor showed importance (such as resisted outer range adduction, age, patient compliance, eccentric adductor strength, etc.), there were three factors that showed the greatest capacity to predict a longer time to return to sport:
1️⃣ Palpation pain at the proximal adductor insertion
2️⃣ Presence of a palpable defect
3️⃣ MRI defined injury at the bone-tendon junction

As a new-ish father, I took some time to reflect on my experience in youth sports... And, because I am a bit of a nerd 🤓, I did some research too 📚
Surprisingly to some, based on the available literature, early sport specialization may not be the right course of action and it may actually be detrimental to long term athletic development... It has been shown to increase the risk of injury and burnout without the added bonus of improved performance 😬
