My 8-year-old helped encapsulate her cousin’s placenta 👀

My sister (and wonderful brother-in-law) welcomed their son this week, and when it came time to prepare his placenta, my daughter didn’t hover by the door. That girl gloved up!

She's admired this work for many years. In fact, many of you know her from the placenta deliveries. She always wants to be the one to bring the bag to the door. If there is time, she has even added her own "good job mom" note🥹

From the moment my sister said she was pregnant, this has been my daughter's desire. Honestly, she may have been more excited to hear the placenta was being picked up over actually getting to hold her cousin, it's a close toss up 😂

And because we homeschool, this was a good hands-on lesson. Because we homeschool moms, don't let anything go to waste ☺️

So give her some love because she keeps asking, "Mom, did you post about me yet!? Do I have comments?" 🤦‍♀️😂

I am not saying labor doesn't come with pain.

But I want us to be careful with how we talk about that pain, because “it’s like breaking 20 bones at the same time” isn’t empowering, it’s terrifying. And it’s not even true. No study has ever measured labor against a bone count. It’s a saying that stuck, not a true Stat.

Here’s what’s actually documented: labor pain does rank among the most intense pain ever recorded, using the same tools hospitals use to measure pain severity. So the intensity isn’t in question.

What’s different is what your body does with it.

Your body was never designed to endure 20 broken bones at once. It is designed for birth. And that design shows up hormonally! Endorphins rising through labor to soften the intensity, oxytocin working as your body’s own calming, pain-easing hormone, all while labor builds gradually instead of hitting all at once. That’s why sudden trauma can send a body into shock, and labor, even at its hardest, doesn’t have to.

Same intensity the saying points to. Completely different mechanism, because your body isn’t malfunctioning through birth. It’s working exactly as it was made to.

Newborns are wired for closeness.

So is your milk.

Rabbit milk is nearly 4x richer in fat than yours. They leave the nest for hours at a time, sometimes nursing only once or twice a day. Their milk has to hold their babies over in their absence.

Human milk is only 3–5% fat. Not because it's lacking. Because you were never designed to be far.

We're a "carry" species. Our babies stay close, so our milk can stay light, made to be given again and again, not stockpiled for the hours in between.

Your body didn't get this wrong. It's calibrated for the exact kind of closeness your baby was made to have with you.

This is the last in-person homebirth class I'm teaching until 2027.

A hospital focused birth class is not the same as a homebirth class. This class covers: creating your birth space and where your team will be, comfort measures when an epidural isn't an option, recognizing a true emergency, transferring to the hospital when warranted and variations of labor that are often normal.
