When you tell your therapist what you’re actually feeling (pain, tension, discomfort, or even emotional stress), it allows them to:
Adjust pressure and technique in real time
Focus on the areas that truly need attention
Avoid making anything worse
Tailor the session to your goals (relaxation, recovery, injury support, etc.)
It also helps them think ahead. If they know what’s going on with your body, they can suggest a plan after the session, like:
Stretches or mobility work
Hydration and recovery tips
How often you might benefit from massage
Whether you should seek additional care (like physical therapy)
Massage isn’t just something being done to you, it works best when it’s a collaboration between you and the therapist. Even small feedback like “that spot is tender” or “a little less pressure there” can make a big difference.
