Informed Consent shouldn’t threaten your narrative of you’re correct.

I read that quote and honestly, that’s probably the best, profound fact I’ve read on social media for a while.

Think about it…in the birth sphere we hard stress informed
consent/informed choice. We stress educating yourself with a wide variety of resources so you have a wide variety of evidence to base your individual decisions regarding care options.

And the structure of industrialized medicine pushes back harder on their preferences being the evidential best choice without discussion.

Informed consent shouldn’t threaten ANY narrative if it’s correct.

Why does asking questions about…[pushing pitocin, induction of labor, delayed cord clamping, delayed or refused specific vaccines…the list is LONG here] create such a hostile environment for birthing women and hospital systems?

Sometimes it’s the approach. We walk into their system knowing what they consider protocol and demand immediate changes. That’s not necessarily wrong, but it is pretty shortsighted. You know they have specific systems and expecting them to alter that is bordering on ridiculous.

Maybe it’s a doctor who is already entertaining questions of his own and you come in, the 100th visit of the day, ‘judging’ his education and training, demanding a blind eye to all he believes in. I’d have a hit do an attitude as well. So would you.

There is really set firm right or wrong. It’s a matter of perspective. From the perspective of modern medicine training, they are the ‘right’ side. From the perspective of ever-growing and ever-changing medical knowledge, we are skirting the ‘right’ side as well.

But of a decision is medically appropriate, informed consent doesn’t threaten it.
Wants don’t dictate appropriateness.
Individuality, your individual medical need at any given point, should dictate appropriateness.

That’s where things get stalled in industrialized medicine. The system we walk into these days is largely lacking in individuality. Protocols are cookie-cutter by nature. Nuances aren’t always considered important.

But yes, the bottom line needs to be clear.
Informed consent shouldn’t threaten your narrative if it’s correct.

You can’t argue this truth.

Hospitals aren’t spaces for ‘natural birth experiences’ so stop acting like you weren’t allowed this or that, or you were treated in a way that took your autonomy…

Because that is not the space for autonomy, for low intervention across the board, for anything natural.

Maybe it will be one day, but even if some of that crept in, it is still not going to be the ‘natural’ space you’re hoping for.

Does that mean hospitals are altogether the wrong space for every birth? Absolutely not!

Not everyone is a natural birth at home person. Not every birth journey leads home.

And that’s ok. Hospitals serve a very much needed service in our communities and the expertise of skill and knowledge built into their space is second to none. We need our hospitals and our doctors and nurses.

But not every birth needs them. And the decision is so much more than most…dare I say all…influencers push as some experience leveling fact.

You are not going to get a natural birth experience in a hospital setting so stop walking in thinking you can control that. You can’t. It’s not the space. And honestly, we need it kept that way.
