Did you know a stuffy little nose can make breastfeeding SO much harder? 👃🏼🤱🏼

I sat down with Katie, CEO of Happy Breathing, Happy Breathing to talk about something we don’t always think about when our babies get sick: how important nasal breathing is during feeding.

Babies rely heavily on their noses to breathe, especially while feeding. When that tiny nose is congested, coordinating suck → swallow → breathe can suddenly become a whole lot harder. 🤧

You may notice your baby:
🤍 Pulling on and off the breast
🤍 Getting frustrated during feeds
🤍 Taking more frequent breaks
🤍 Struggling to maintain their latch
🤍 Feeding for shorter periods because they need to stop and breathe

One simple thing that can help? Clear their nose BEFORE the feed. 👃🏼✨

Saline + gentle nasal suction before breastfeeding can help open those little nasal passages so baby can breathe and feed more comfortably.

And mama—when your baby gets sick, the LAST thing you want to do is run around trying to figure out what you need. Be prepared before the boogies arrive. 😂🤍

📌 SAVE this for the next stuffy nose.
🤍 SHARE it with a breastfeeding mama who needs to know this.

And if you want the link + discount for my favorite nasal aspirator, comment “BREATHE” below and I’ll send it your way! 👃🏼💨🤍

Breastfeeding AND bottle feeding?

🍼The bottle you choose can make a difference.

When I was a new mom 9 years ago, I thought the ComoTomo was the perfect bottle for a breastfed baby. It looked like a breast, it was marketed as “breast-like”… it made total sense to me!

Then I became an IBCLC and learned that “breast-like” doesn’t necessarily mean breastfeeding-friendly. 🤯

When I’m helping a family choose a bottle, I’m not looking for the one that looks the most like a breast. I’m looking at the ni**le shape, flow rate, baby’s latch, and how their tongue and jaw are working during the feed.

Some bottles I commonly reach for with breastfeeding families are:
🍼 Evenflo Balance+
🍼 Lansinoh
🍼 Pigeon
🍼 Spectra
And Dr. Brown’s? Sometimes! I actually really like it for certain babies because there is no single bottle that is perfect for every baby.

But here’s the MOST important part:
Please don’t be afraid of giving your breastfed baby a bottle. 🤍
There are SO many reasons a baby may need to breastfeed and bottle feed—returning to work, supplementation, NICU stays, prematurity, low milk supply, feeding challenges, sharing feeds with another caregiver… or simply because it works best for your family.

A bottle doesn’t have to compete with breastfeeding. With a bottle and flow that work well for your baby, responsive/paced feeding, and a good latch, we can help breast and bottle work together while supporting baby’s oral motor skills.

And if you’re already using one of the bottles I called a “NO” in this reel—don’t panic and don’t throw your bottles away! 😂🤍

If your baby is breastfeeding beautifully, transferring milk well, feeding comfortably from the bottle, and thriving, I’m not here to create a problem where there isn’t one.
My goal is to give you the information I wish I had as a new mom so you can make an informed choice for your baby and your breastfeeding journey. 🤍

Because sometimes babies need breast + bottle, and that’s okay. 🥹🤱🏼🍼

If you need support please reach out. You don’t have to figure it all out alone.

My favorite breastfeeding fact 🤍

When your baby latches, they’re doing so much more than drinking milk.

During breastfeeding, tiny amounts of your baby’s saliva and oral contents can travel back toward the mammary ducts through something called retrograde flow.

And this is where breastfeeding absolutely blows my mind!

Your baby’s body and your body are communicating.

When your baby is exposed to illness, your milk can respond with changes in antibodies, white blood cells, and other powerful immune factors that help protect them.

And breast milk never stays the same.
It changes throughout the day.
It changes throughout a feeding.
It changes as your baby grows.
It changes as their needs change.

Your milk provides fats, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, hormones, enzymes, antibodies, living cells, and countless bioactive components—all working together to nourish, protect, and help your baby thrive.

Think about that for a second.
Your baby latches onto your body and a biological conversation begins!

Their body communicates with yours.
Your body responds.
And the milk you make is alive, dynamic, and uniquely yours.

It’s not just milk.
It’s nutrition.
It’s immunity.
It’s protection.
It’s communication.
It’s two bodies still working together. 🥹🤍

As a NICU nurse, an IBCLC, and a breastfeeding mom, I have learned so much about the science of human milk—and somehow, the more I learn, the more incredible it becomes.

So for the last day of World Breastfeeding Week, I wanted to leave you with my favorite reminder:

Your body isn’t just feeding your baby.
It’s listening to them, responding to them, protecting them, and helping them grow.

How freaking incredible is that? 🥹

Happy World Breastfeeding Week. 🤍

Special thank you to Katie, CEO of Happy Breathing for having me on her podcast! I loved getting to talk about two things we’re both so passionate about- the importance of airway and lactation and how closely they work together. Katie is doing such amazing things for families, and I have to say, her suction device is my favorite!

🤍 Have you ever heard of Breast Gymnastics?🤍

If not, this is one breastfeeding tip you’ll definitely want to save!

With just a few gentle movements before breastfeeding or pumping, you may be able to help your breasts drain more effectively, feel more comfortable, and even ease engorgement.

Developed by Maya Bolman, IBCLC, Maya Bolman, IBCLC Breast Gymnastics is a gentle movement technique that helps improve breast mobility and support healthy lymphatic drainage.

✨ It may help:
• Relieve engorgement
• Reduce inflammation
• Help your breasts drain more effectively
• Make breastfeeding and pumping more comfortable
• Support healthy milk removal
• Support overall breast health

🤍 Here’s how:
🤲 Gently support your breast with both hands.
⬆️ Move it up and down.
⬅️ Move it side to side.
⭕ Then make slow circles in each direction.

That’s it!

❌ No deep massage.
❌ No painful squeezing.
❌ No digging into clogged areas.

Just slow, gentle movement.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that if your breasts feel painfully full, you need to massage harder. In reality, aggressive massage can sometimes make inflamed breast tissue feel even worse. Gentle movement is the goal.

As an IBCLC, this is one of my favorite techniques to teach because it’s simple, takes less than a minute, and can make such a big difference for some families. If you’re dealing with engorgement, inflammation, or your breasts just aren’t emptying well, this is absolutely worth trying.

💙 My hope is that this little tip makes your breastfeeding journey just a little easier. You deserve support, encouragement, and someone in your corner every step of the way.
