The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) is creating billing codes for lactation care for the first time. CMS is asking how this work should be valued and who is allowed to bill for it.
12,516 comments have been filed, and of those comments, only TWO mentioned lactation.
The rate CMS sets often becomes the rate every insurer uses as a benchmark. UHC is currently setting the tone right now for contracting and reimbursement, but intervention by CMS would effectively end that.
The comment period closes September 14.
If you’re an IBCLC, a parent who has ever paid out of pocket for lactation care, or you’re a perinatal provider that supports families navigating feeding difficulties, share this with someone who needs to see it.
