Postpartum Depression vs. “Baby Blues” — What’s the Difference?
Becoming a mother is life-changing, but it can also bring emotional ups and downs. Understanding the difference between baby blues and postpartum depression (PPD) is important for getting the right support.
🌸 Baby Blues (Very Common)
* Starts within a few days after delivery
* Mood swings, tearfulness, irritability, anxiety
* Feeling overwhelmed or emotional
* Usually improves within 2 weeks without treatment
💔 Postpartum Depression (PPD)
* Can start anytime within the first year after birth
* Persistent sadness, hopelessness, or emptiness
* Loss of interest in baby or daily life
* Difficulty bonding with baby
* Changes in sleep, appetite, or energy
* May include thoughts of self-harm or feeling like a “bad mother”
* Does NOT go away on its own and needs support and treatment
💡 The most important difference:
Baby blues are temporary. Postpartum depression is deeper, longer-lasting, and treatable with professional care
