A mother's heart was never meant to outlive her daughter.

Yet somehow it keeps beating.

Not because the pain disappeared.

But because love refuses to.

Every morning I wake carrying a name the world cannot hear the way I do.

Every night I fall asleep still grateful that I was chosen to be her mother.

Missing her has become part of my heartbeat.

So has loving her.

One reminds me of what I lost.

The other reminds me of what I will never lose.

Because nothing, not even heaven, can take away the bond between a mother and her daughter.

Today begins Bereaved Parents Month.

For most people, July is just another page on the calendar.

For us, it is a month that quietly says, “We see you.”

There are millions of parents who have buried a child.

You pass us in the grocery store.
You sit beside us at work.
You wave to us at the ball field.
You laugh with us at restaurants.

Many days, you would never know.

Because bereaved parents become experts at carrying the unbearable while looking like we’re carrying nothing at all.

This month isn’t about asking for sympathy.

It’s about recognizing a love that didn’t end when a heartbeat did.

It’s about remembering that every accomplishment, every holiday, every family photo, every birthday, every ordinary Tuesday still has someone missing from it.

It is about speaking our children’s names without lowering our voices.

It is about acknowledging that we are still parents.

Always.

Bereaved Parents Month is a reminder that our children are not forgotten. It is a time to recognize the parents who continue to love, miss, and carry their children every single day. It is an opportunity for others to pause, remember, and better understand a journey that never truly ends.

If you are a bereaved parent, we hope you’ll see yourself here.

If you love someone whose child has died, stay with us this month. Listen. Learn. Remember with us.

Because our children mattered.

They still matter.

And so do the parents who carry them in their hearts every single day.

💜 If you would like to honor your child today, tell us their name in the comments. We would be privileged to remember them with you.

I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately.
The thoughts about the future over the past 20 years since my daughter passed. I’ve always thought about that and this is the one thing that’s consistent with grief is how you grieve for the future for what could’ve been. I feel some days it wasn’t meant for me and it just leaves me asking why.

People often think I grieve only the son I lost.

But there is so much more than that.

I grieve the conversations we never got to have.

The milestones I never got to witness.

The dreams that were still waiting for him.

The future that carried his name.

I wonder what kind of man he would be today.

What stories he would tell.

What joys would fill his life.

A mother's heart naturally imagines those things.

And when those dreams cannot unfold, she grieves them too.

Not because she is stuck in the past.

But because love always imagines a tomorrow.

And sometimes the hardest loss is mourning the beautiful tomorrows that never had the chance to arrive.

Has anyone experienced this? I know I have. It’s so hard to see people go from being great friends to exiting quietly from your life after loss. This is why education about the grief process and how to support someone who has lost a loved one.

Grief doesn’t just change your relationship with the person who died. It changes your relationship with the people still here.

There are friends you thought would always be part of your life who slowly drift away. There are people who show up once and never come back. And sometimes there are unexpected people who step into your world and stay.

Most bereaved parents can probably look back and see a very different address book than the one they had before their child died. Not because they wanted it to change, but because loss has a way of revealing who is willing to walk beside you when life becomes unbearably hard.

I find when I’m traveling to an area like Colorado, I’m taken back by the stunning views that surround me. In these moments I feel sad that my Brit is not here to experience this. She would have loved the places I have traveled since she departed this world nearly 20 years ago.

I’m confident her view in Heaven is far more beautiful than I could ever imagine but the two places I’ve been, Alaska and Colorado, remind me of God’s work. The beauty of His creation sometimes leaves me breathless but filled with gratitude.

This was so true for me. I feel like after losing my mom, then my grandmother prepared me, unknowingly, for the loss of my daughter.

You've always felt different from other women.

You're not imagining it.

Daughters who lost their mothers young learned things about life, loss, and impermanence long before most of the people around them had to.

That changes a person.

It changes how you read a room. What you'll talk about and what you can't stand talking about. How you love. How you grieve. How you hold yourself together when everyone else seems to fall apart.

You didn't just lose a mother.

You lost decades of feeling understood.

That's a different kind of grief…and it deserves a different kind of acknowledgment.

That’s why I’ve put together a FREE 24-page guided journal, along with a 15-minute video for you to watch or share with anyone who might need it. ❤️
