Did your parents or family prepare you for your first period?

Here’s some helpful tips to start the conversation:
1. Talk about periods early.
2. Explain that periods are normal and healthy.
3. Use simple language and explain her body parts to her on the level that she can understand.
4. Use books and visuals to help her with managing her period currently or in the future.
5. Tell them about your period experience. If it was bad, tell them how you want better for them if it’s normal and fine and tell them how it’s easy for you to manage.
6. Celebrate her first period!
7. Be easy on yourself. You might not know all the answers, but you’re doing your best to prepare her for her future.

Happy World Autism Awareness Day!

I had the pleasure of representing Neurogirl Therapy at an Happy Awareness expo! Did you know that boys are four times more likely to be diagnosed with autism when compared to girls? That means that girls are getting less support and interventions to help them navigate their female experience.

Neurogirl Therapy is here to support any family or girl navigating their puberty, body image, and self-esteem.

Your child with special needs can teach you a lot about being present in a moment. Sometimes children with autism can be so hyperfocused on their interests that they don't even realize you are in the room. Relish that perspective. The joy and focus they have in those moments should inspire you to be mindful in every moment of your life. Mindfulness is a type of meditation that involves being aware of your current sensations and feelings without judgment or interpretation. It is not only great for your child, but for you as well. So many times parents are thinking about the next thing, that they miss the present moments and memories.

According to a Swedish study by J. Butwicka that used the Swedish population-based registers, we identified 26,986 individuals diagnosed with ASD from 1973-2009 and their 96,557 non-ASD relatives. The risk of substance use-related problems was the highest among individuals with ASD and ADHD. Further, risks of substance use-related problems were increased among full siblings of ASD probands, half-siblings, and parents. The study concludes that ASD is a risk factor for substance use-related problems.

We have to be diligent in educating kids with disabilities about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse and how it impairs their lives. Neurogirl Therapy does not only educate girls on their feminine experience but also on life skills and risks of substance abuse.

I can't stand when people say people with autism don't have "emotions." In actuality, they are some of the kindest, caring, and thoughtful people around. From childhood, they are conditioned to do whatever anyone tells them to do without consideration of their feelings. They often see people for what others show them instead of understanding their true intentions. That can lead to them being manipulated into relationships and coerced into sexual acts.
Neurogirl Therapy aims to stop this cycle of abuse by educating girls with disabilities about relationships, consent, and self-protection. If you know a parent of a girl with a disability, tell her how Neurogirl Therapy will prepare her daughter for the future.

Find people who understand you and your child. You and any professional who works with your child should be on the same page about your child's care. Find people who take the time to explain their methods and why they are making recommendations. Don't be afraid to ask questions if you don't understand something. As an occupational therapist, I sometimes catch myself talking in my medical jargon when speaking to caregivers. Sometimes parents just smile and nod, other times, parents give me a puzzled look. It's ok to say "Can you explain that again?" or "I have no clue what you're talking about." If professionals are unwilling to make things clear for you, work with your schedule, or seem unreliable, find someone else! Your child's progression depends on how well you can carry over strategies at home. If you don't understand what's going on or disagree with strategies, then progression will be almost impossible. Professionals want to help your child, so find the one who works best with what your family needs.

Hey yall! 🥰 I’m T’erra Dale, a licensed occupational therapist, certified autism specialist, and the owner of Neurogirl Therapy. In 2021, I noticed there wasn’t any services specifically for girls with disabilities in my area. This didn’t sit well with me. God put on my heart to start Neurogirl Therapy to help girls with disabilities live their lives to the fullest. I want girls to know they are beautiful, worthy of love and success, and can excel in life. ✨

Do you know any girls with disabilities? if so, tell them or their parents about Neurogirl therapy!
