Yum! Great way to hydrate and nourish with a cool treat on our hot summer days!

I used to think popsicles were just a fun summer treat. Now I see them as one of the easiest ways to sneak extra nourishment into hot summer days.

These hibiscus lemonade popsicles are made with lemon juice, hibiscus petals, rosehips, raw honey, and water. That’s it. They’re tart, refreshing, and full of vitamin C and antioxidants without the food dyes and mystery ingredients.

One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that immune support doesn’t have to look complicated. Sometimes it’s just keeping nourishing things easy and accessible when kids are running in and out all day long. We’ve been keeping these in the freezer lately and they disappear fast around here.

What’s one “fun food” you’ve turned into something more nourishing over the years?

I don’t need scientific studies to prove that regeneratively grown is more nutritious but it will be great to have these studies for those who are skeptical!

Can the way food is grown change its nutritional quality?

A new project from the Nutrient Density Initiative and Edacious is beginning to measure exactly that. Early findings suggest regeneratively-produced foods may contain more protein, healthier fat profiles, and fewer heavy metals compared to conventional samples.

The goal is to assess our diet and lifestyle impacts and address those that are likely contributing to our health issues. That is “root cause” medicine and that is us, taking control so we can achieve optimal health!

The next frontier in medicine isn’t another drug.

It’s a radical shift in how we view the body, the brain, and disease itself.

Depression is often rooted in systemic inflammation, gut dysbiosis, mitochondrial dysfunction, insulin resistance, trauma, or disrupted circadian rhythms. ADHD may be tied to neuroinflammation, poor blood sugar control, or nutritional gaps like low magnesium, zinc, or omega-3s. And heart disease? It’s largely a food-borne illness, driven by a diet of ultra-processed, inflammatory, nutrient-poor calories.

There is no single root cause. But there are root causes.
And they are almost always connected by lifestyle, environment, and systems-level dysfunction.

Medications have their place… But they were never designed to reverse chronic disease. They manage symptoms, often while the underlying dysfunction worsens.

If we want to reverse the chronic disease epidemic, mental and physical, we need to stop asking what drug treats this and start asking why the body lost balance in the first place.

The answer is in how we eat, move, sleep, connect, and live. It’s in our soil, our food system, our communities, our kitchens.

The next revolution in medicine will come not from the lab but from returning to the root.

Not really surprised by this. Meat from healthy animals has protein and fat that is essential to healthy brains and immune systems!

As a medical school professor, I teach about APOE4 -- the gene that makes you 2.5x more likely to develop Alzheimer's. We've told patients there's nothing they can do about it.

A new JAMA Network Open study of 2,157 adults just proved us wrong.

Higher meat consumption completely abolished the APOE4 dementia risk.

The data:
-> APOE4 carriers with highest meat intake: 55% lower dementia risk
-> Their typical 2.5x excess Alzheimer's risk? Gone entirely
-> Cognitive decline reversed: +0.32 standard deviations over 10 years
-> Unprocessed meat was protective; processed meat was harmful regardless of genotype

Researchers propose APOE4 is an evolutionary adaptation to meat-rich diets. The gene isn't a defect -- we just stopped feeding it correctly.

This is personalized metabolic medicine. Your genes load the gun, but your diet pulls the trigger -- or puts the safety back on.
