1. You don’t have to attend every argument you’re invited to.
You’re allowed to nod, smile, and mentally teleport yourself far, far away. Not every comment deserves your energy.
2. Set time limits before you walk in the door.
Give yourself a “tap out time.” If the day starts going off the rails, you already have an exit strategy. Freedom loves a plan.
3. Take breaks…real ones.
Pretend you need to take a call. Step outside. Sit in your car. Hide in the bathroom for five minutes if that’s the only quiet space available. You get to regulate before you re-engage.
4. You can say no without explaining yourself.
“No, thank you” is a complete sentence. So is “That doesn’t work for me.” Boundaries don’t require permission slips.
5. Keep expectations realistic.
If your family has been behaving the same way since 1998, they won’t transform because you brought a gratitude casserole. Go in with clarity, not fantasy.
6. Choose your “one thing.”
Pick one behavior you are committed to holding onto: staying calm, eating in a way that feels good to you, not oversharing, leaving early, or keeping your sense of humor intact. One anchor makes the whole day easier.
And most of all: remember that holidays are supposed to be enjoyed…not survived. You deserve a day that feels good, peaceful, and grounded, even if that means changing how you show up this year.
From all of us at Noyau, we’re wishing you a warm, meaningful Thanksgiving filled with moments that actually matter. We’re grateful you’re part of our community.
