Culture often frames depression strictly as a broken circuit or a chemical glitch in the brain. However, this episode of the Hidden Brain podcast, "Rethinking Depression"—presents an alternative, evolutionary perspective. Psychologist Jonathan Rottenberg shares his personal journey through severe depression alongside decade-spanning research to explore how low mood might actually function as an evolutionary "stop mechanism," prompting us to pause, re-evaluate, and adapt when life's circumstances become unsustainable.

So much of daily life is spent running on "autopilot"—ruminating on the past, worrying about the future, or reacting out of habit. The "Mindfulness" module on mybestself101.org introduces mindfulness as present-moment awareness practiced with open curiosity and acceptance. This resource outlines foundational attitudes and research-backed tools to help you break free from cognitive clutter and experience life more fully.

For many of us, offering warmth and kindness to others comes naturally, while extending that same care inward feels like a foreign concept. In his article "I Didn't Know I Could Love Myself!" on centerformsc.org, Mindful Self-Compassion co-founder Dr. Chris Germer explores why self-love is a radical act. He highlights how giving ourselves permission to treat our own suffering with love helps correct an inner imbalance, reducing anxiety and shame while laying the groundwork for genuine resilience.

Rest is not a reward for work, it’s a prerequisite. 🌿

We have all watched ourselves make a decision we knew was wrong—procrastinating on a key goal or pulling back just when things are going well. In this episode of the Being Well Podcast, titled "Self-Sabotage: Why You Do What You Shouldn't, and How to Stop," Dr. Rick Hanson and Forrest Hanson reframe this frustrating habit. The discussion reveals how self-sabotage often functions as an outdated form of psychological self-protection, keeping us safe in our comfort zones at the expense of our long-term growth.
