Craving ice after bariatric surgery?

It might be more than just a habit.

PICA is a condition that causes cravings for things that aren't food, like ice, chalk, dirt, paper, or clay. And sometimes, it can be a sign of a nutritional deficiency, especially iron deficiency.

After bariatric surgery, deficiencies can happen if you're eating less, absorbing nutrients differently, or not taking your vitamins consistently.

The important thing is this: don't ignore it.

If you're suddenly craving non-food items, let your bariatric team know. It could be your body's way of telling you that something is missing.

The good news? Once the underlying deficiency is treated, those cravings often improve.

πŸ’¬ What's the strangest craving you've experienced post-op?

Do you have to lose weight before bariatric surgery?

Not necessarily.

For years, many programs required patients to lose weight before surgery to "prove" they were committed. But research has shown that mandatory pre-op weight loss doesn't reliably predict long-term success.

That said, there are times when losing weight before surgery is helpful.

βœ”οΈ It can reduce liver size
βœ”οΈ Make surgery safer and technically easier
βœ”οΈ Lower risks related to anesthesia in higher BMI patients

Today, the focus is less about proving yourself and more about preparing yourself.

That means improving nutrition, building healthy habits, treating conditions like sleep apnea, and following your surgical team's plan.

The goal isn't to prove you deserve treatment.

The goal is to help you improve your health.

Feeling colder after bariatric surgery?

You’re not alone.

After significant weight loss, many patients feel colder because of:
❄️ Less body fat (less insulation)
❄️ Lower calorie intake (less heat production)
❄️ Temporary metabolic changes
❄️ Possible low iron or protein levels

For most people, this improves over time as the body adjusts.

But if it comes with severe fatigue, dizziness, or weakness get your labs checked.

πŸ’¬ Did you notice this after surgery?

Head hunger and real hunger are NOT one and the same.

Many people notice that after bariatric surgery, their physical hunger decreases but cravings can still happen.

That’s because surgery changes your stomach, not emotional triggers, habits, or stress responses.

One of the best things you can do when a craving hits?
Pause.

Wait 10–15 minutes. Walk away from the kitchen. Drink water. Distract yourself.

The goal isn’t to never crave food again it’s learning how to respond differently.

Because long term success isn’t just about changing your stomach. It’s about retraining your brain too.
