WHEN SHOULD YOU GET YOUR I-693 EXAM?

Many people wait until the last moment to schedule their immigration medical exam, but doing it earlier can save a lot of stress.

Here’s why early scheduling helps:
• The I-693 form completed on or after November 1, 2023 does not expire under current USCIS rules.
• If your paperwork is almost ready, completing the medical exam in advance lets you submit a full package and avoid delays.
• If any test result or vaccination record is missing, you’ll have time to take care of it without rushing.
• You can plan around lab schedules, holidays, and travel — no last-minute surprises.

Scheduling ahead means fewer delays and a smoother process once USCIS receives your documents.

AVOID COMMON I-693 MISTAKES (SAVE THIS)
• Don’t open the sealed envelope. USCIS needs it sealed. Keep your personal copy separately.
• Use the same legal name everywhere. If your name changed (marriage, court order), bring documents that show the change.
• Bring vaccine records from the U.S. or your home country. If they’re not in English, add a simple translation with dates and vaccine names. If records are missing, your civil surgeon may recommend titers or additional doses.
• List your medications and conditions. Write the names and doses so nothing is missed.
• Pregnancy or possible pregnancy? Tell the clinic before any X-ray is ordered. They’ll advise on timing and precautions.
• Documents must be signed in front of the civil surgeon. Don’t pre-sign forms.
• Plan ahead. While most cases are done in about a week, rare follow-ups (positive screening tests, extra documentation) can make the process take up to a month. Schedule your exam 3–4 weeks before you plan to file.
• Keep copies. Ask for a personal copy of everything you submit.

TIMING
• Most people finish the process in under 1 week after the appointment.
