🎥 COUNTDOWN TO LAUNCH! 🚀

ASHS students have been “Scrubbing In” all summer via Zoom sessions to get ready for next week’s moving day/orientation/first day of classes trifecta.

Today it was the staff’s turn, gathering together for their first-ever staff meeting and orientation at the Black Belt Museum, right down the street from the school’s first-year offices and dorms on the campus of the The University of West Alabama in Livingston.

Afterward, the group headed to campus to distribute teacher supplies, assemble furniture and office equipment, and sort apparel for students to collect on move-in day next Tuesday.

🤝 THE MEANING OF ‘CONVENING’ 💜

Our ongoing relationship with Bloomberg Philanthropies reminds us that the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences is part of something much more significant than one school.

Last week, ASHS and the ASHS Foundation joined healthcare and education partners from across the country at Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Healthcare High School Partner Convening in New York City, where we connected with fellow members of this groundbreaking national network of 13 schools in 9 states that is preparing students for high-demand careers through innovative, early, healthcare-focused learning and unique hands-on training.

What made the experience especially meaningful was seeing how far ASHS has come. As we count down to welcoming our historic inaugural class on Aug. 13, we’re no longer just learning from others: We’re also increasingly contributing to the conversation.

Foundation Vice President Rob Pearson shared ASHS’s approach to building successful public-private partnerships in one panel discussion, while Patrick Trammell, interim CEO of our valued partner Whitfield Regional Hospital, and Dr. Becky Avery Reamey, assistant professor of Family and Community Medicine and director of the Alabama Statewide Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Program (Alabama AHEC Network), brought their expertise and perspectives to the networking.

We were also moved by the presence of Mike Bloomberg, founder of Bloomberg.org. His participation was a powerful reminder that this partnership extends far beyond funding. Bloomberg Philanthropies has remained deeply invested in helping project leaders learn from one another, solve challenges together and build healthcare high schools that will transform lives and communities for generations to come.

Thank you to Bloomberg Philanthropies for believing in ASHS, for creating this incredible network of innovators and for continuing to walk beside us as we prepare to open Alabama’s first healthcare-focused residential high school next week.

🎥 COUNTDOWN TO LAUNCH! 🚀

Friday was Moving Day for ASHS administrators and staff as they shifted their Demopolis offices to the school’s first-year mini-campus on the grounds of the The University of West Alabama in Livingston

The big move-in comes Aug. 11, when the inaugural class settles into their dorm rooms in preparation for orientation Aug. 12 and the first day of school Aug. 13.

🏥 WITNESSES TO HEALTHCARE HISTORY

We were honored to welcome Dr Eric Mackey, Alabama State Superintendent of Schools, and Deputy Superintendent Mrs. Angela Martin for a surprise visit today to the future home of the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences in Demopolis.

After receiving an update from Head of School Laura Eves Bailey and Rob Pearson of the ASHS Foundation, they toured the 10-acre Brasfield & Gorrie construction site, where our academic and residential buildings are taking shape right on schedule for their grand opening a year from now.

Even more exciting? They also learned about the incredible inaugural class of students from throughout Alabama who will make history when ASHS opens its doors on Aug. 13.

“They’re super supportive,” Bailey said after the visit. “They were excited to see firsthand the progress on campus and everything that’s gone into recruiting our first students.”

The countdown is on—and the education in Alabama is getting closer every day! 💙

🌟 Thank you to reporter Amanda Pevey and the Elmore/Autauga News for this wonderful story highlighting five exceptional Elmore County students who will help make history as members of the inaugural class of the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences!

We also appreciate the Elmore County Public Schools Board of Education for recognizing these outstanding young people and celebrating this exciting milestone. Congratulations to the three students who were able to attend the board meeting and represent the first ASHS class with pride.

A special thank-you as well for recognizing ASHS Head of School Laura Eves Bailey whose roots in Elmore County make this moment especially meaningful. Laura’s lifelong commitment to education and student success has come full circle, and we’re proud to have her leading Alabama’s newest residential specialty school.

These five students will soon join classmates from across Alabama as the historic first class of ASHS begins its journey on Aug. 13. We can’t wait to see what they accomplish!

During the July 21 Elmore County Board of Education meeting, Dr. Renee L. Tucker introduced the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences (ASHS) and recognized the students from Elmore County who will attend the new school beginning this fall.

ASHS will welcome its first-class Aug. 13.
