🐾 Case Spotlight: Helping a French Bulldog with IVDD Through Conservative Chiropractic Care 🦴

Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) is unfortunately common in breeds like French Bulldogs. It can cause sudden pain, posture changes, and reluctance to move.

Recently, I treated a 7-year-old French Bulldog who presented with several concerning symptoms.
The owner reported the dog was panting excessively, lying around more than usual, and had not eaten that day. The pup appeared very painful when the abdomen and back were touched and was standing in a “praying posture” with the neck extended, which is often a sign of spinal discomfort.
Radiographs were taken to rule out abdominal issues. The abdomen appeared normal, but imaging revealed mineralization in multiple intervertebral discs, consistent with Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD).
A conservative treatment approach was chosen prior to opting for surgical intervention.

What Conservative Care Looked Like

This patient has now completed two chiropractic treatments aimed at improving spinal mobility and reducing nerve irritation.

Along with treatment, the owner was given specific home care instructions:
✔ Strict rest initially (no running, jumping, or stairs)
✔ Harness use instead of a neck collar
✔ Cold therapy to the thoracolumbar spine for inflammation in conjunction with anti-inflammatory mdication prescribed by her Vet.
✔ Short leash walks only while supporting the hind limbs

After the second visit, the dog was already showing improvement in comfort and posture, so gentle rehabilitation exercises were added:
• Passive range-of-motion for the hind legs
• Gentle weight-shifting exercises while standing
• Short controlled leash walks while suppoing the thoracolumbar region
• Slow sit-to-stand transitions to activate core muscles

Why Chiropractic Care Can Help Dogs with IVDD

While chiropractic care does not repair the disc itself, it can play an important role in conservative management by:
🦴 Restoring motion to restricted spinal joints
🦴 Reducing nerve irritation
🦴 Decreasing muscle guarding and tension
🦴 Supporting better movement and recovery

Many dogs with mild to moderate IVDD can improve with early conservative care, proper rest, and guided rehabilitation.
Every case is different, and severe cases may require advanced imaging or surgery, but when appropriate, conservative management can be a valuable first step.

🐶 Seeing a dog regain comfort and mobility is always rewarding, and this girl is making strides on her road to recovery.

If your dog suddenly shows signs like back pain, reluctancy to move, excessive panting, or posture changes, it’s important to have them evaluated promptly.

Your pet’s spine matters too. 💙🐾r
