Contrast and movement make a big difference in visual perceptual skills. Because the Sonflower Ranch had white peacocks, our children with CVI and low vision were able to locate them when we visited.

We had such an exciting day at the Sonflower Ranch. The sounds and movement of so many animals made it very engaging and interesting. From loud cow mooing, to goat and peacock screams; we heard an earful for sure. This is part of developing our sensory efficiency skills that not only address visual processing but also auditory location and identification. Go Eliana, you are rocking your navigation skills through ALL of your senses!!!

We are excited to attend the Sonflower Ranch Spring Shindig tomorrow with several of our students. They boast of having over 200 petting zoo animals available and a wide variety of activities. We will be exploring with all of our senses and using this as an opportunity for orientation and mobility practice. Whoot whoot.

Happy Teacher Appreciation week. Cheers to those that wear many hats but play one crucial role; your child's teacher.

Ellis has all the smiles every time I visit. We've been doing fun cooking sessions lately that support our sensory efficiency goals. She smells, taste and is part of the process of cutting and spreading using "tools" to make things happen. She is smart, capable and participates throughout all of our lessons. Whoot. Whoot.

Dr. Cathy Smyth, who is contracting with our services, is one of the co-host and creators of this podcast. She has a wonderful wealth of knowledge and lends incredible support to children and families in our population. She often presents at national conferences, teaches at two Universities and is seeing some of our kiddos via telehealth. I highly recommend checking into this podcast.

In the episode, Jenny interviews Rachel Will and Meggan Heady, two experienced public school teachers who once taught her daughter. The conversation is about how educational experiences are strengthened through collaboration between families, general education teachers, and teachers of the visually impaired or other specialties. This was too good not to share.

Learning is a biological process, not a performance.

Learning begins long before school. It lives in movement, in relationships, in sensory experiences, in play, in co-regulation, and in curiosity. It is shaped by safety, attachment, environment, and opportunity.

When a child feels safe, seen, and supported, the nervous system shifts into a state where exploration becomes possible. Curiosity activates. Neural pathways strengthen. Skills integrate.

Learning is not compliance.
Learning is not memorisation.
Learning is not comparison.
Learning is integration.

It is the ongoing process of building neural architecture through experience. This month, our March content will be around learning.

Today our friends, Elliana and Kiliam got to explore in a new place and with new friends. Elliana and Kiliam had the opportunity to see, feel and touch a wide range of sensory materials and play spaces. They were enganged, active, and sad too leave when it was time. We loved visiting this beautifully well thought out sensory gym for our friends with visual impairment including cerebral visual impairment. We will be back. Thank you to The Third Place for making such an inclusive environment.

Zanna is such a delightful, energetic young lady. She is learning to visually scan, touch and explore with many cool textures and objects. After having major eye muscle surgery and optimizing her visual space, she is developing more visual curiousity with new things and she's loving. Nice work Zanna.
