"Regardless of your disability, you determine your abilities."

For Aveanna nurse Lakeisha, Disability Pride Month took on a personal meaning in 2018 when she became an amputee. After years as a nurse, Lakeisha witnessed firsthand the determination of her patients as they faced challenges with strength and optimism. She adopted this mindset for herself when she began to navigate her own disability journey.

"As someone who has experienced disability personally, it brings a level of empathy when I care for my patients at Aveanna," said Lakeisha. "My patient, Anya, is tough as nails and doesn't let anything get to her. She inspires me every day to do the same because regardless of your disability, YOU determine your abilities."

This Disability Pride Month, we celebrate individuals like Lakeisha and Anya who remind us that strength, determination, and individuality come in many forms. Aveanna patient Onyx was born with a rare genetic disorder. His mom, Madison, was introduced to the Colorado Family CNA Program, which truly changed she and her son's lives!

Four years later, Maddy is a parent CNA for Onyx, ensuring she can be present for every one of his milestones while keeping him safe and healthy.

"From handling therapies to delivering monthly supply orders, Aveanna has been the greatest blessing for our family," said Madison. "They not only helped me to get my CNA license which was so rewarding, but their support also meant I was able to be the one to provide Onyx with all the care he needs."

Together, Madison and Onyx have been able to make special memories and explore their community. As the parent of a special needs child, Madison has the resources she needs with Aveanna to be prepared for every step of her son's unique journey.

"With the Colorado Family CNA Program, I don't have to worry about making ends meet or having to rely on someone else to give Onyx the care he needs," said Madison. "We are so lucky to be a part of Aveanna and are incredibly grateful!"
