91 Years Ago Today.

On June 10, 1935, two alcoholics met in Akron, Ohio and began a conversation that would change millions of lives forever. June 10 is widely celebrated as the founding date of Alcoholics Anonymous and marks Dr. Bob's last drink.

What began with one alcoholic helping another grew into a Fellowship that continues to carry a message of hope around the world. A.A.'s program is built on the simple foundation of one alcoholic sharing with another.

Today we honor Bill W., Dr. Bob, and the countless members who came before us and made recovery possible.

Most importantly, we celebrate those who are sober today.

🩺 Dr. William Duncan Silkworth, affectionately known throughout Alcoholics Anonymous as "The Doctor Who Loved Drunks," was one of the most influential figures in the early history of recovery ❤️

Long before alcoholism was widely understood, Dr. Silkworth treated alcoholics with compassion, dignity, and hope. His groundbreaking understanding of alcoholism as an illness would later become a cornerstone of the Alcoholics Anonymous program and helped pave the way for millions of people to find recovery.

In this special recording from Dr. Silkworth's gravesite in Long Branch, New Jersey., A member of Alcoholics Anonymous shares a beautiful excerpt and reflection honoring the physician whose work changed countless lives.

More than eight decades later, Dr. Silkworth's legacy continues to live on through The Doctor's Opinion, sponsorship, service, and the countless men and women who have found freedom through recovery.
